Chapter 5

Sitting in front of the dressing mirror, Elisa had gotten ready and changed into the white weddinggown brought by the costume designer. As she stared at herself in the mirror, Elisa got lost inthought. She had never imagined what she would look like on her wedding day, let alone that herwedding would be the result of a trade. A bitter smile crossed Elisa’s delicate face. She had no ideawhat the man she was about to marry looked like. The wedding was set to start in twenty minutes,Elisa felt it was unusually long. Just as she decided to get up and take a breath by the window, sheheard the sound of high”heeled footsteps outside. Elisa turned around and saw a wealthy woman ina tight red sweater dress walking in. Her hair was elegantly styled, adorned with a pair of sparklingruby earrings. Around her neck was a precious diamond necklace, giving her a very luxuriousappearance. Anna’s sharp gaze carefully examined Elisa from head to toe. She was pleased withElisa upon their first meeting. The girl’s fair skin was smooth, and her delicate makeup made herlook radiant, like a budding red rose. The white wedding gown hugged her graceful figure, and theskirt design perfectly showcased all her best features, making her appear pure and elegant. “Areyou Elisa, the girl chosen by the Barson family to marry my son?” “Mrs. Fischer, nice to meet you.”Elisa quickly confirmed the identity of the person in front of her. She must be her futuremother”in”law. Elisa remained composed and politely nodded at Anna. “I don’t know what theBarson family has told you, but I hope you know that my son is special, he is in a vegetativestate. He has been in a coma for three years. You still have a chance to back out now.” Anna staredat Elisa, her eyes fixed on her, unwilling to miss any emotions on her face. Upon hearing that theperson she was going to marry was in a vegetative state, Elisa was shocked for a few seconds, butquickly regained her composure. Her marriage was already a trade, and a vegetative personcouldn’t do anything to her, it is worthy, right? “Mrs. Fischer, I have no regrets. Since I am marryinginto the Fischer family, I will take care of Mr. Fischer.” Anna looked at Elisa, who stood firm in frontof her, and her expression softened slightly. “As long as you have thought it through, you need toknow that my son may never wake up, but you must stay by his side and never leave him for therest of your life.” “I will. However, I hope that after marrying your son, you will not interfere with myfreedom. I still need to complete my studies and pursue a normal career in the future.” “As long as

you don’t bring disgrace to the Fischer family and don’t do anything that would hurt my son, I canagree to this condition. I also need you to sign a prenuptial agreement with our family.” Anna’sresponse was even more straightforward. Elisa didn’t know if her choice would make her regret it inthe future, but she knew that the most important thing now was to get the money for her mother’ssurgery. Suppressing the uneasiness in her heart, Elisa nodded, “Okay.” The lawyer on the sidetook out a document and placed it in front of Elisa. Elisa had never experienced such a situationbefore and was worried about being deceived, so she carefully read through each clause. Afterfinishing reading, Elisa breathed a sigh of relief. There were no abnormal terms in the contract. Ingeneral, she was not eligible to divide the Fischer family’s estate and could not initiate a divorce.Only the Fischer family had the power to dissolve the marriage. They were probably also on guardin case their son woke up and didn’t like her, so they could request a divorce and find someone heliked. Elisa also hoped that her son would wake up soon and end this marriage. So, decisively, Elisasigned her name on the agreement. “Mrs. Fischer, I have finished reading it, and there are noissues.” Anna looked at Elisa in front of her. She was decisive yet not reckless, clearly knowingwhat she wanted. This kind of girl was someone she admired. Anna smiled warmly at Elisa andreached into her handbag, producing a bank card. “Here is $100,000. It’s a gift from me to you, awarm welcome to the Fischer family.” Elisa was taken aback. $100,000! She was astounded by herfuture mother”in”law’s generosity. Hadn’t she heard that they came from a less affluent background?“Young lady, don’t be too surprised. About Fischer family, there is much more beyond yourimagination. But don’t believe anything about us from your stupid father and greedy stepmother, they are just a bunch of ignorant creeps. About you, I did a research and know all your stories. Youare lucky to marry my son. Your mother’s health is very bad. One successful surgery can only helpstabilize her, but can not save her completely. She needs several other surgeries too. Thus onemillion dollars is just for a beginning. But don’t worry, you belongs to Fischer family now. As long asyou behave yourself and listen to me, I will pay for all your mother’s medical bills. You don’t need toworry about money anymore.” Mrs. Fischer’s words shocked Elisa greatly. There was much more tothis Fischer family than she had ever thought. Mrs. Fischer also seemed to have no regard for herfather or his family at all. Elisa stared earnestly into Mrs. Fischer’s eyes for three minutes and thennovelbin

solemnly said: “OK. I trust you, and I’m willing to make that deal with you.” Now Elisa was hopefulfor the future. After all, a vegetative husband would not interfere with her life. In addition, the Fischerfamily had granted her freedom. He was her husband in name only, and she could pursue her owndesires. Mrs. Fisher was very satisfied with Elisa’s answer and said gently: “Young lady, I like youvery much. I have always wanted a daughter like you. Thus I allow you call me mother from now on.I will treat you as my daughter during the duration of your marriage with my son. In addition, there isone more matter I need you to solve as soon as possible.” Anna suddenly turned serious, leavingElisa feeling perplexed. “Our Fischer family needs an heir. I hope you can bear a child for my son!”
