Chapter 256

Kayden shuddered and said, “That's against the law, Ms. Zoey. I'll get a long jail term if we get caught. What grudges do you have against Ms. Jefferson to warrant such drastic actions?”

Zoey looked up and shot him a cold-eyed stare. “Mr. Jennings, with great risk comes great reward. Ifyou don't want to be bothered by your huge debt anymore, you'll have to take some risks. It's your call.”

“I...” Kayden fell silent, caught in a dilemma.

“You don't have to make a decision now. I'll give you a couple of days to consider, but I hope to heargood news from you in a few days' time. I've specially prepared that gift of money for you, so don't let itgo to waste,” Zoey said.

She took the check from the table, shoved it into Kayden's hand, then leaned over and whispered in hisear, “On the other hand, if you disappoint me, I'm afraid you'll have no place in Dyke Pharmaceuticalanymore.”

Kayden turned around in shock. “You... Is that a threat?” he asked in a quivering voice.

Zoey smiled, patted him on his shoulder, then turned to head out of his office. As she walked off, shesaid, “Mr. Jennings, you managed to climb the corporate ladder and rise to become the head of thissubsidiary, so I believe you are an ambitious and capable man. I'm sure you'll make a decision that's awin-win for both of us. If you successfully pull off this feat, I'll put up a recommendation for you to berewarded with Shurmer Group's stock option.”

Kayden tightened his grip on the check and watched as Zoey disappeared around the corner of thecorridor. He then quickly walked over, closed his office door, fished out his phone, and dialed a number.

“Hello, is it Mr. White?”

A soft grunt of acknowledgment came from the other end of the phone.

After a quick, cautious glance around the room, Kayden lowered his voice and said, “Mr. White, Ms.Zoey came by my office a while ago. She wanted me to tamper with the ingredients of the newmedicine and frame Bailey. Why do you think she is doing this? Did Zeke find out I messed with theingredients, so he sent his sister to sound me out?”

After a brief silence, Kayden heard Cadence asking in his low, husky voice, “Did she say why shewanted to frame Bailey? Also, what is she offering you in return?” novelbin

“She's offering me three hundred million to settle my gambling debts,” Kayden shared truthfully. “I haveno idea why she wishes to frame Bailey. She refused to tell me. I reckon a woman usually fights withanother over a man. Of course, it is also possible that Zeke found out I tampered with the ingredients,so he sent her over to test me out.”

“This is interesting!” Cadence burst into laughter, seemingly amused. “Looks like Ms. Jefferson hasoffended quite a number of people, and everyone is trying to seek revenge by targeting this newmedicine. This life-saving medicine is going to be life-changing for Bailey, as she will end up in jailbecause of it!”

Kayden narrowed his eyes and asked, “So, you want me to accept Ms. Zoey's proposal?”

Cadence laughed evilly, and his voice turned a pitch higher because of excitement. “Of course! You

have to accept her proposal! If the matter is exposed, we can put all the blame on her. Mostimportantly, once she's involved, the Shurmer family will be implicated too!”

Cadence knew that in the event Zeke found out about the tampering in the future, he would hesitate toreveal the matter to the authorities, as his own sister would be incriminated in the crime as well.

Kayden's eyes lit up, and he happily said, “You're brilliant, Mr. White! That is true. So long as Ms. Zoeyis involved in this, the Shurmer family can't absolve themselves of the crime.”

Cadence's laughter rang out from the other end of the phone. “Haha, luck is on our side! Bailey isdoomed!” he remarked gleefully.

Back in the infirmary at the Revelle residence, Veronique managed to bring down Justin's temperatureand put a cast on his leg. She finally breathed a sigh of relief when she saw on the EGC that his heartrate and rhythm had returned to normal.

Looking at the handsome face of Justin, who was lying unconscious on the bed, she felt a pang ofsadness.

The reason why she stayed away from home for the past few years was so as not to cause Justin anytrouble. That was also the reason she never revealed the truth to her father.

She thought she could stay overseas forever with her son and cut all ties with Justin. Alas, it was notmeant to be. An illness had brought them back together.

Is this our destiny?

“Veronique.” Yvonne's voice drifted in from outside the room, and Veronique instantly snapped out ofher contemplative mood.

She walked out of the ward and closed the door behind her. “Why are you here, Yvonne? How's Dad?Is he calmer now?” she asked hoarsely.

Yvonne sighed softly, gave her sister a comforting pat on the shoulder, and said, “Dad is not angry withyou. Rather, he's mad at himself for misunderstanding you all these years. When Justin told him thetruth about what happened seven years ago, he was overwhelmed by self-reproach. Don't worry. He'llbe fine after a few days. How's Justin, and how's his leg?”

Veronique shook her head and hugged Yvonne tightly. “I made a bad decision, didn't I, Yvonne? Thechild was conceived during a regretful incident. However, despite knowing his arrival in this worldwouldn't be welcomed by most people, I insisted on giving birth to him. In the end, I brought misfortuneto both him and Justin,” she cried.

“Don't be silly. Zephyr will be sad if he hears that!” Yvonne chided. “You can't turn back time and undowhat you did, so you just have to move on and face it courageously. Justin would not have come toapologize if he had not accepted Zephyr's existence. The two of you shouldn't be wasting time onuseless and unimportant things. More importantly, you should be looking for a cure for Zephyr.”

Veronique's tears rolled down her cheeks when she blinked. “Okay, I get you.”

Two days later, Zoey got a call from Kayden, and he agreed to work with her.

She was standing in front of the full-length window, and when she heard his reply, a smile broke out onher face. “You are indeed a smart man and did not disappoint me, Mr. Jennings. The check I left with

you is rightfully yours now!” she said. “Remember, just add some ingredients to make the consumerssuffer from serious side effects, but nothing fatal, okay?”

On the other end of the phone, unbeknownst to Zoey, Kayden had an evil smile on his face.

If there is no fatality, how can we make sure Bailey is doomed? Oh, Ms. Zoey, my dear Zoey, you can'tblame me in the future when the crime is exposed. After all, you were the one who approached me withthis deal. I'm afraid you'll have to take my place in prison instead.

“No kidding, Ms. Zoey. The only reason why I accepted your deal is that I'm desperate. Of course, Iwouldn't want to cost anyone their lives over this! Don't worry. I'll definitely act according to your order.”

“Great! I'm counting on you, Mr. Jennings.”

After ending the call with Kayden, Zoey lifted her glass of wine and took a sip.

Oh, Bailey! You're going to end up like your sister, Rhonda. That's what happens when you fight withme over a man! Rhonda... Rhonda... But that darn Rhonda is still officially Mrs. Luther!
