Their eyes met. Neither bothered to conceal their hostility. Time seemed to have stood still untilEmmalyn began fidgeting listlessly in Kate’s arms.
Kate patted Emmalyn to console her and heaved a sigh of relief when the child finally stopped crying.Then, she turned to Maggie and smiled. “Is this how a powerful family like yours treats your guests?I’ve been standing here with a child in my arms, and you won’t invite me in.”
Maggie did not respond. Instead, she threw open the door and stood aside.
The women entered the living room. As if she was in her own home, Kate sat down on couch andplaced Emmalyn beside her.
Being over six months old, Emmalyn had learned to sit up without help. Cuddling a doll i her arms, shelooked sweet and meek.
Maggie felt conflicting feelings rising in her heart. If the doll-like little girl was not Alex’s child withanother woman, she might be fond of her. That moment, however, felt strange and uncomfortable.
Shifting her gaze away from Emmalyn, Maggie reiterated her question, “What can I do for you?”
