As they were talking, Alice furrowed her brows while cradling her stomach. She said to Elisa, “Elisa, I
might actually be going into labor early. The pain is becoming more noticeable.”
“I’ll take you to the hospital immediately.”
Elisa started to get nervous.
She helped Alice get up, but Alice stopped her and said, “First, go to my closet and get the pre-packed
maternity bag I prepared a while ago. We need to take it with us to the hospital. Also, my prenatal
checkup records are in the drawer of my dressing table, we should bring those too.”
“Alright, you stay seated for now. I’ll go get them. Don't worry, don't be nervous, I won’t be long.”
Elisa rushed out to get the maternity bag. She grabbed that along with the prenatal records, and in no
time, she dashed down the stairs.
Alice was still waiting for her, but to her surprise, once Elisa grabbed the maternity bag and her
prenatal records, she dashed off without waiting for Alice or even asking her along.
Alice was bewildered. Though Elisa had told her not to be nervous, Elisa herself was so anxious that
she left without even calling for her.
She got up, still cradling her stomach with one hand, and slowly walked out of the room.
When she reached the top of the stairs, she saw that Elisa was nowhere in sight downstairs.
Alice could not help but laugh.
She imagined Elisa arriving at the hospital with the bag in hand, only to realize that she had not
followed along. She wondered how Elisa would react.
Alice stopped in her tracks and took out her phone. She initially intended to call her husband, but then
she thought about how he might also become as nervous and frantic as Elisa. So, she dialed Audrey’s
number instead. Her mother-in-law was accustomed to dealing with life’s challenges, and being an
experienced mother, she was usually calm and composed.
Audrey answered her call promptly.
“Where are you, Mom? Are you on your way back?”
“I’m with Darrell, on our way home. What's going on?” Audrey asked.
“Mom, I'm feeling some abdominal pain. I'm not sure if I'm going into labor early.”
Audrey replied swiftly, “Don’t panic. I’m almost there. Have you eaten something? Grab something to
eat if you haven’t. For your first pregnancy, it doesn’t usually happen so quickly. There will be some
pain for a while, and for some people, it might even last a day or two before giving birth.
“Grab a bite and only then you’ll have the energy to deliver. Do not panic, alright? I’m on my way. Don’t
drive to the hospital, it’s not safe. Is Elisa home? Tell her to help pack your stuff, I’ll get you to the
hospital immediately.
“As for Clive, I’ll inform him after we reach the hospital. I’ll tell him to come straight to the hospital to
avoid having him coming back all flustered, which might lead to accidents.”
“Ok, I haven’t told Clive. Elisa…”
Alice could not hold in her laughter. “I told Elisa to get my maternity bag for me. She grabbed it and just
ran off somewhere, leaving me here by myself.”
Audrey muttered, “That little…”
She could not hold in her laughter as well. “Alice, I see Elisa’s car, I’ll block her car. Don’t worry, I will
reach you in no time.”
“Please call out to Elisa first, Mom. I’ll grab something to eat.”
It was not a great pain, just a slight discomfort.
Alice could still take it.

The housekeeper went up the stairs to support her as soon as he heard the commotion. He reminded
her to be careful, afraid that she might misstep.
After Alice told her to get the maternity bag, Elisa rushed downstairs right after she retrieved it along
with the prenatal check-up records. She told Remy, “My sister-in-law could be in labor right now. She
said that she had a tummy ache, so we should rush to the hospital.”
Remy saw her dash out in a hurry and followed her instinctively.
He then grabbed the wheels, not letting Elisa drive. He said that she would definitely drive recklessly as
she would be too anxious.
Just like that, the two of them drove off with the maternity bag that was prepared for Alice.
