James felt a jolt of electricity.
However, instead of feeling excruciating pain, he felt rather comfortable.
“Next, the temple.”
Maxine took a deep breath.
The True Energy inside her body had been greatly depleted after the first needle.
She grabbed a second needle and inserted it into James’ temple, which depleted more of her True
Energy. The needle seemed to be capable of automatically absorbing one’s True Energy.
“The third needle to the right temple.”
Maxine did as she was instructed.
After eleven needles, her True Energy was completely drained. Wearing a pale face, she said, “I can’t
continue… I’ve depleted too much of my True Energy. I can’t summon any more.”
“Mhm.”
James nodded.
He knew that using the Crucifier would severely deplete one’s True Energy. Besides, the more needles
one inserted, the more depleted one’s True Energy would be.
“You can pull them out now.”
After pulling the needles out, Maxine sat in a lotus position to restore her True Energy.
Though James was feeling much better now, he still had a long way to go before regaining his True
Energy.
Being at the second rank, Maxine could only insert a limited number of needles. As such, it would take
roughly half a month for James to reach his peak.
If Tobias was the one inserting the needles, James could perhaps restore his True Energy within a
single session.
However, he could not trust Tobias and did not want him to learn of his secret.
The same went for Maxine. She was a Caden who stayed by Tobias’ side at all times. However, James
had no other options as he could not find anyone else.
Now, he could stand and even get dressed.
He put away the Crucifier.
Seeing that James could now stand, Maxine, who was sitting in a lotus position, was stunned. “Y-You
can walk now?”
James smiled. “All thanks to you.”
Shocked, she exclaimed, “How magical!”
She knew the condition of James’ body. His True Energy was dispersed, subsequently colliding with
the meridians. James only survived because her grandfather forcibly used True Energy to reattach the
meridians. He now needed rest.
She did not think that James would ever regain his strength. Seeing him standing and walking around,
she was shocked.
James merely smiled and said nothing.
He knew that though his True Energy was dispersed, it did not vanish but instead concealed itself in
the meridians of his body. That was why he decided to use the Crucifier to stimulate the meridians to
forcibly gather True Energy.
James walked over to the Moonlit Flowers on Cliffside’s Edge, took it down, and laid it on the floor.
Then, he took the ancient scroll and put it beside the painting.
Sitting in a lotus position, he looked at the ancient scroll and the Moonlit Flowers on Cliffside’s Edge
before him.
So did Maxine.
James shut his eyes.
The images of the Moonlit Flowers on Cliffside’s Edge and the ancient scroll kept on surfacing in his
mind. He murmured, “What’s the connection between them? What secret does the painting hold?"
Maxine could not figure anything out, so she simply gave up and focused on regaining her strength.
James, on the other hand, persisted.
He scrutinized each aspect of the painting, fearing that he would miss out on any minute detail.
In the blink of an eye, a day passed.
However, James did not learn anything new.
Maxine left after restoring some of her True Energy. She went out for a meal and did not forget to bring
some food back for James.
Soon, she was back with food in her hands.
“It’s time to eat, James.”
