Chapter 40

The dream suddenly stopped as it was about to end, and John awoke hastily. Sophia’s face graduallyfaded into nothingness before his face. He exhaled and slowly sat up without knowing the reason whyhe had such a dream. It was not like they weren’t on total abstinence; after all, they had already sleptwith each other twice for the past two days. Thus, he was really confused as to why he still hadsuggestive dreams like that.

John rose to his full height to distract himself from the dream that he had. After a while, he picked uphis laptop and moved to the couch in the living room. Just as he placed his phone down on the table, itrang. He briefly glanced at it but did not answer the call. novelbin

The ringing stopped for a few seconds, and then, a knock on the door ensued. Surprised, he walkedover to the door. The visitor’s figure could not be seen through the peephole, but to be fair, there wasnothing to be afraid of in the broad daylight. So, he opened the door.

Standing outside was the woman from earlier, but she had somehow already changed into anotheroutfit; she now wore a bikini set that was perfect for lounging on the beach. The woman had great skinand an admirable figure. Her hair was let loose and fell behind her shoulders. She leaned against thedoor frame with her pose accentuating her body curve. Looking at John, she asked, “PresidentConstance, let’s discuss a little more, shall we?” She spoke slowly with a suggestive tone.

John immediately understood her meaning. However, he only studied her from head to toe. In his mind,he tried to recall her name. He was always good at recognizing faces, but oddly, he could neverremember that particular woman. Standing still, he asked, “Did President McCaw tell you to come herein an attire like this?”

The woman’s posture slowly straightened with the corner of her lips slightly curved. “No, PresidentMcCaw doesn’t know anything about this.” Her eyes were playful. “He also won’t hear about this.”

He scoffed. “Does he know about the drugging, then?”

The woman was startled; she hadn’t expected him to question her about that once again. Her lipspursed as she visibly struggled to search for the words to answer him. “I really don’t know what you’retalking about. We didn’t spike it with drugs.”

John responded half-heartedly and closed the door without a look at her. He never liked people whoendlessly pestered him as well as those who never owned up to their mistakes—yet, the woman didboth. Never one who fancied speaking much, he picked up his phone from the living room and quicklymade a call to President McCaw.

The collaboration between their companies was actually a win-win situation for the both of them.Constance Company was naturally happy to participate, but even so, that didn’t mean that John waswilling to be used in such a way.

President McCaw picked up the call in an instant while his voice carried a tint of delight. “PresidentConstance! I’m finally hearing from you.” In fact, he had indeed called John a few times since the nightbefore, but the latter hadn’t answered the call—not even a single time.

He had a bad temper; everyone in the industry knew that. So, he was straight to the point. “Remove thewoman at my door.”

President McCaw initially didn’t know what he meant. “What?”

John laughed coldly. “I think you’ve miscalculated when you decided to pull something like this.”

President McCaw was still confused. “Huh?”

John did not feel the need to explain and hung up. He was a man of few words and had alwayspreferred to use as few words as possible. Normally, it would have been enough to express hisdissatisfaction. Everything that subsequently ensued were understood and settled without any furtherexplanation.

He returned to the table and continued to peruse the documents on his computer. It wasn’t long beforeZack called again. John did not answer the first time around and his phone immediately rang for thesecond time, making him a little frustrated; after all, he was being relentlessly bothered on his well-deserved break. Somewhat annoyed, he answered the call, “Spill.”

At the other end of the line, there was loud music playing in Zack’s background, making it a little noisy. So, he hadn’t realized that John was irritated and said that they were still at Edge of the World. Then,he mentioned that Sophia was exceptionally happy and took many photos by the two boulders beforecommenting that it was a pity that John couldn’t join them.

John’s tone was hostile upon interrupting him. “Did you call me just to tell me all these?”

Zack paused, thereupon changing the topic in an instant. “No, no. I called to inform you that Old Mrs.Constance had phoned, asking about our schedule. She wants to know when we’re returning andseems… to want Miss Bailey to pick you up.”

John closed his eyes in response. “Alright, I got it. If she calls you again, tell her that our schedule haschanged and I didn’t inform you about it. Just put all the blame on me.”
