Chapter 316

Chapter 316

I walked into a completely dark house. Other than the guards on duty, even the maids were asleep, butit was past midnight, so that wasn’t too crazy.

Marvin wasn’t at home, which made the house feel even more empty. Although it was too bad, it wasn’tthat difficult to get used to-because my dad and Alex had always been workaholics.

I made my way to my room and took a deep breath as I fell to the bed. Work was not that tiring, but Icouldn’t say the same about Rona. The bar was not doing well, and honestly-it would be shocking if thebar would still be standing at the end of the week.

It seemed like rest wasn’t a part of my routine anymore because my next thought went to Marvin. Hesaid he wanted to be honest with me. He asked me to spend the day together-and I still had no ideawhere all of this was going. Tomorrow would be interesting.

Was he going to confess his feelings?

Was he going to tell me the truth about his family?

Was I crazy for hoping he wouldn’t tell me the truth about his family?

Yes, I wanted Marvin, and after giving it a second thought, I did want to go on a date with him-but I didnot want to lie to him.

There was always this small part of me fearing for his reaction. I wasn’t the daughter of a random cop, Iwas the daughter of a DEA agent. There was no way in hell he was going to accept that.

Why does life have to be so complicated?

I opened my eyes and yawned as my sleep got interrupted by the sound of footsteps near my bed.Who would even make that much noise in the morning?

Startled, I let out a yell as an unknown girl looked right into my eyes. To my surprise, she yelled back-while she was the one in my territory.

“Why are you yelling?” I spoke, confused. “You’re in my room!”

The girl moved her brown strands of hair to the side, allowing me to get a better look at her face.Ihadn’t seen her before.”I’m sorry, I’m sorry!” She giggled.

“I’m sorry, who are you?”

She stuck out her hand. “Amelia, at your service!”

“Amelia?”

“Yes.”

“Okay?” I frowned, still confused about what she was doing in my room. “Thanks for introducingyourself,” I spoke awkwardly.

“I’m twenty years old, a Gemini. I can clean your room, fold your clothes, keep you company, carry youon my back, and I’ll even crawl if you want me to.” Amelia gave me a thumbs up.

She seemed to have a lot of energy, which was strange coming from my mouth. Even then, it was niceto have someone in the house who could match my level of energy.

“Where’s Marvin?” I rubbed my eyes and stretched out my arms. If he was not downstairs but at work, because he somehow decided to bail on me-I would kill him.

Amelia gasped. “Oh, big brother?”

“Marvin?” I asked again. Since when did he have another sister? Was she also one of Mario Castillo’sbastards, which I wasn’t aware of?

“Marvin is in the kitchen,” Amelia told me. “He’s waiting for you.”

“Thanks.”

Only now had I noticed the mid-sized box in her hands. “What’s with the box?” I wondered.

“It’s your outfit for your date tonight!”

So it was indeed a date.

“Don’t worry, I picked it out, and it’s really cute!” Amelia reassured me. As long as it wasn’t a dress orten- inch heels, I had nothing to complain about.Less work for me.

“Wait a minute-how do you know my size?”

“Apparently the maids tell Marvin everything!”

“Okay, not creepy at all.” I scratched my head. It was a good thing to know these maids were all up inmy business as well.

“Thanks for your help, Amy.” I thanked my new ally. “It’s good to have someone my age in this house.” Isighed. “The other maids are boring, Panther is annoying, and Marvin is ugly.”

Amy had a confused look on her face. “I’d give Marvin a solid eight out of ten.”

“I know, and it’s actually ten out of ten.” I got up from the bed. “I was just trying to be funny, but I don’tthink we’ve got the same sense of humor.”

“I should definitely brush my teeth before going to the kitchen. I don’t want to kill anyone.” I attemptedto make another joke. “So if you don’t mind…”

“No, of course not. I’ll go!” Amy nodded, before leaving my room. After making myself a bit moredecent- looking, I made my way downstairs and walked to the kitchen. I could hardly believe my eyesas I stared at the surprise in front of me.

Marvin was making breakfast?

Good morning?” I took in the amazing smell of the food. Marvin turned around to face me, and asalways, I was blinded by his handsomeness. Unlike yesterday, he was dressed a bit more casually.

“Finally, you’re up!” He pulled out a chair for me. I couldn’t help but admire all the dishes on the tableand even felt a bit embarrassed. Was he trying to outdo me?

“Did you make all of this?”

“Yes,” Marvin spoke proudly. “I hope you’re hungry because I worked really hard on this.”

For some reason, he seemed a bit different today. The Marvin in front of me was not confident but a bitanxious and perhaps a little shy.

“I’m hungry, and all of this looks really good!”

“Good.” Marvin released a breath. He grabbed a plate and filled it with food. “So…the girl-

“Amelia?”

“Yes, her.”

If she hadn’t addressed him as her big brother, I would’ve been jealous because that was the kind ofperson I was. Still, he could not blame me for being curious.

“She’s a new maid,” Marvin informed me. “If you need anything, just ask her.”

“I know. She even crawls.” I snorted, still in disbelief that there was actually someone weirder than me.

“I think I missed that part.” Marvin laughed along as he handed me my plate.

“Did she give you the box?”

“For our…date?” I blushed. I thought he would’ve corrected me, but he didn’t. That was a good sign.“Thanks for the outfit!” I gushed. “I haven’t seen it yet, so it might as well be ugly-but still, thank you!”

“You don’t have to thank me.” Marvin winked. If there was one thing he was not afraid of, it had to beeye contact, but I was not the one to lose a challenge-so I stared back into his eyes.

The moment Marvin’s lip curled into a perfect smile, I panicked and did not know what to do Maybe Iwasn’t up for this challenge.

“Your eyes are beautiful,” I spoke. Was this really the best I could do?

“Thanks.”

For some reason, Marvin was still staring at me. If he would stare any longer, I bet he could even findmy pimples if I had them. “So….beautiful eyes,” I repeated, nervously. “Sometimes they’re brown, sometimes they’re green, sometimes yellow-”

Yes, this wasn’t going anywhere.

Marvin laughed at me while I moved back, embarrassed. “You sound silly. My eyes are brown.” Hemocked me. Well, this was embarrassing.

“I know.”

“Cute, but silly,” Marvin spoke.

I couldn’t handle any more embarrassment and felt eager to change the subject, so I moved my eyes tothe food and opened my mouth.

“Your mouth is open.” Marvin commented. Yes, thanks for stating the obvious.

“Yes, aren’t you going to feed me?” I closed it again.

“Ah, because you fed me yesterday?” He shot me an understanding smile. I gave him a confident nodand leaned into the spoon so he could give me a bite.

“This is good!”

For a second, my heart stopped beating as Marvin leaned in closer and rested his hand on my cheek. What was he doing?

“So you had low expectations?”

“Yes.” I gulped, swallowing my food. I was supposed to intimidate him. It should not be the other wayaround.

“I’m sorry, I’m not wearing any makeup!” I blurted-way to go, Elena.

It was a good thing Marvin could appreciate my clumsiness. “I can tell. You’re a bit of a catfish.” Hesquinted his eyes. That was a joke. That had to be a joke.

“Do you really think so?” I pouted, nudging his shoulder. Marvin chuckled, shaking his head.

“No…I think you’re beautiful.”

Beautiful?

“Thank you.” I blushed. Marvin blinked his eyes and cleared his throat. It took me a second before Icould finally understand his intentions.

“You’re handsome.” I gave him a compliment in return. It was not a lie.Amy was out of her mindbecause there was no way Marvin was just an eight out of ten. Impossible.

“What are you thinking about?” Marvin woke me up from my thoughts. “Or who….” He continued. “It’sme right?”

I opened my mouth to answer his bold question, but I couldn’t find the words. What was this suddenchange of behavior?

“LL”

“What’s up, love birds!” Panther saved me from disaster. Marvin pulled away quickly and moved hischair as if he had just committed a crime. He was so confusing

“I made breakfast if you’d like some!”

Panther glared at us, disgusted. “How are the maids going to get paid if the two of you keep makingeach other breakfast?”

Marvin scoffed. “You’re not obligated to eat. You can also…I don’t know, not eat?”

“And do what? Let good food go to waste?”

Panther grabbed a plate and joined us. “Marvin took a day off to spend time with you!” He announcedfor the entire world to hear.

“Thank you.” I smiled at Marvin. Panther yawned loudly. “No, I should thank you-because that means Ihave the day off as well!”

As long as he was not joining us.

“So, where do you want to go shopping?” Marvin ignored Panther as he should. “Just you and me this

time.”

He looked guilty, meaning he must’ve noticed the dismayed look on my face.It wasn’t his fault. Whatelse could he do about Panther’s presence?

“I don’t really care, as long as we can swipe your card.” I shrugged nonchalantly.

Panter almost choked in his drink. “Watch out, Marvin!” He shouted. “This one is not wasting any time.A gold-digger at heart!”

“I was just kidding!” I defended myself. That comment did hurt me as I didn’t want anyone tomisunderstand my intentions. Marvin didn’t pay much attention to Panther’s words. “I’m not a gold-digger. I have a job.” I whispered.

“That’s what they all say.” Panther grinned.

This time Marvin jumped in and threw a piece of fruit to his head. “Pedro, that’s enough. Stop it.”

“Alright, I’m sorry-Elena.” Panther chuckled. I was touched by Marvin as he could’ve laughed along withPanther, but he didn’t.He decided to stick up for me instead

Speaking of jobs, how was work yesterday?” Panther asked.

Work? That was not something I felt like discussing. It would only be a matter of time before I wouldn’teven have a job anymore.

“I don’t want to talk about it.” I managed to get out. Marvin had a worried look on his face, whilePanther’s expression was full of curiosity.

“Did you get into trouble?” Panther wondered.

“Uh…” I fumbled with my napkin. I bet this was not a good time to tell them about the bar.

“You did, didn’t you?” Panther demanded an answer. For a split second, I looked at Marvin but quicklyturned my head after seeing the angry look in his eyes.

“She said she doesn’t want to talk about it.” Marvin scolded his friend. “Come on, man. Stop it.

“Marvin, it’s okay.” I planted a smile on my lips. Who would break up their fight after Marvin would beatthe crap out of him?Because it wouldn’t be me.

“No, it’s time for him to respect people’s boundaries,” Marvin spoke, irritated. “It’s not okay. Enough isenough.”

Panther threw back his head and burst into a loud, ringing fit of laughter. “I’m just playing with you,Elena.” He got up from the chair and patted Marvin’s shoulder. “I just like getting on his nerves.”

“The way he cares about you….it’s crazy.” I heard him mutter as he left the room. “I think he’ll even killfor you, Jesus.”novelbin

I didn’t know whether to celebrate that Marvin cared for me, or to fear his best friend claiming he wouldactually kill for me. Would he?

Marvin glared at the door until the very second Panther was out of sight. “If he ever makes you feeluncomfortable, just tell me-and I’ll kill him if that’s what he wants.”

I froze for a second. Unfortunately, I could not tell the difference between a serious threat and a joke, considering Marvin was actually capable of killing him.Oh my god, would that make me an accessory tomurder?

“How about I eat my breakfast so that we can get out of here?” I stuffed my mouth with food, eager toleave this place.

“Deal.”
