Chapter 2014

Jonathan chuckled, "Once I take out that cobalt bomb, I'll zip right back to Zion. Since Raiden's got

your number, you've got to keep your eyes peeled, Ella. I reckon he's gunning for you harder than a

bull chasing a matador."

"I know!"

Gab cracked a smile, "Today's Estelle's birthday, and it's almost nightfall. I'll leave the rest of the day to

you guys. I'm heading back!"

He turned to Estelle, "Happy Birthday!"

"Take care, and don't you forget our deal — to visit Grandpa back in C City with me!" Estelle's eyes

bore deep affection.

"I will!"

Gab nodded emphatically, gave her shoulder a reassuring pat, said his goodbyes to Jonathan, and

strode off.

As Gab's tall figure vanished, Estelle gazed out the window, watching his car pull away from the manor.

Jonathan wrapped her in his arms, "Don't worry about anyone else. In tomorrow's mission, make sure

you stay safe."

He held her close, kissing the crown of her head, his voice a tender murmur, "Ella, even if it's just for

me, don't get hurt."

Estelle hugged him back, "Of course, we'll make it home together!"

They stood by the floor-to-ceiling window, silently embracing, their heartbeats synchronizing, as if their

lives were woven into each other's.

After a while, Estelle looked up, "Is it time to head back to Zion?"

"Not just yet," Jonathan replied, tucking a loose strand of hair behind her ear, his eyes warm and

focused, "We haven't had cake yet."

"Cake?" Estelle arched an eyebrow, "Didn't we already do that?"

Jonathan frowned slightly, "That didn't count!"

Estelle laughed softly, unsurprised by his stubbornness.

Jonathan lifted her into his arms, "Come on, I'm gonna bake you a cake."novelbin

Estelle giggled, resting on his shoulder, "Since when do you bake cakes? That's news to me."

"There's a lot you don't know. I've got to keep a bit of mystery, so you don't fall out of love with me!"

Jonathan joked as he carried her downstairs.

Of course, he wouldn't tell Estelle about how he woke up at 3 a.m., summoned a pastry chef, and was

taught step-by-step how to bake a cake.

The chef sipped his coffee, lavishing praise, "Mr. Alvis, you're the finest leader I've ever seen. Even

your cake-baking is dashing. Your mother would be over the moon with a cake made by your hand."

He had been puzzled, "How'd you figure this cake's for my mother?"

The chef was equally surprised, "Isn't that peach-shaped pastry for her?"

Estelle eyed the ingredients on the counter, slightly overwhelmed, "How do we even start with this?"

Jonathan hoisted her onto the counter and handed her the prepared fruit, "Just watch and learn!"

Jonathan rolled up his shirt sleeves and began with the cake base, mixing butter and sugar in the mixer

at high speed.

Then he added egg whites and baking powder, continuing to mix.
