He opened the door and got out of the car. He tugged at his tie, dispelling the dark look in his eyes, bef
ore going inside.
The fragrant scent of food drifted over, and a faint look of amusement rose in
Kirk’s eyes. “Darling. I’m home.”
Caroline was bringing the food out to the dining table. When she heard Kirk, she turned her head. “You’
re back?”
“Yes. Have you bought a wedding gown?” Kirk asked as if he didn’t have a clue.
Caroline pulled a chair out for him. “Not yet.”
Kirk sat down, spreading his arms.
Caroline was still wearing her apron. Confused, she asked, “What’s up?”
“Want a hug.” Though he sounded like a kid demanding candy, the fatigue in his eyes was obvious.
Caroline’s heart twisted. She reached out to embrace Kirk.
Kirk snuggled his head into Caroline’s embrace, rubbing against her tummy. Sounding displeased, he s
aid, “Darling. I should quit!”
Caroline was stunned. She looked down at him but only saw his thick hair.
“Why do you suddenly want to quit?”
“I want to start my own company.”
Caroline understood in an instant. Kirk must have found out about what happened today. She
bent out so that she could meet Kirk’s gaze. “Is this because of Jane Dawson?”
“No.”
Kirk thinned his lips and pulled Caroline into his embrace. “You suffer too much.”
Caroline laughed. “How am I suffering?” She didn’t feel like she was suffering.novelbin
“Look…” Kirk looked around at the dishes spread on the table.
“We’ve been married for so long, but you still have to cook. A good husband would hire a housekeeper
to take care of you.”
Caroline looked at him, astounded. “I think it’s just fine to cook for myself. Besides, I like cooking. It’s a j
oy of life.”
“But I feel like you’re doing too much.” Kirk caressed Caroline’s fingers.
