Pearl gave herself only half an hour to grieve. During that time, she made an effort to reconcile her
feelings with Richard and bury her love deep within her heart.
What mattered most now was not dwelling on her sorrow but saving her mother. She couldn’t afford to
sit idle and give up.
After mustering her resolve, she called Drew, anxiously rubbing her phone while waiting for it to
connect. When the call was finally answered, she snapped back to reality and began
speaking.
“Drew?”
However, there was silence on the other end for a while, and Pearl started to think that someone had
picked up the call by mistake. Then, she heard a familiar voice.
“Pearl.”
“Sean?” Pearl was taken aback. “Why did you pick it up? Where’s Drew?”
Sean turned his head and glanced at the bathroom, where Drew was taking a bath. Then, he
continued, “He’s taking a bath. Why are you calling him?”
After a short hesitation, Pearl asked tentatively, “Are you okay?”
“Well, I would have assumed that you still wanted to marry me if you asked me that.” Sean chuckled,
and though Pearl couldn’t see him, she could imagine his grin.
Blushing, Pearl retorted, “Nonsense.”
“Alright, I’ll stop teasing you.”
Sean acted as if nothing unusual had happened between them. It felt like they were still the partners
who worked together at the company, and this eased Pearl’s discomfort.
“So, why are you calling him instead of me?”
His question left Pearl momentarily speechless. However, she knew that Sean was also a Cooper, and
he would find out about her plans sooner or later. Deciding not to keep it a secret, she answered
honestly, “I called Drew because I need to borrow his cargo ship.”
Sean, being perceptive, could deduce the reason behind her request. “You want to leave secretly,
right?”
Pearl nodded, acknowledging that she couldn’t hide the truth from him. “Yeah, I want to go abroad.”
Sean, in his usual playful manner, started teasing her. “But he can’t arrange the cargo ship for you. You
called the wrong guy.”
Pearl had expected a refusal, and while she was disappointed, she understood that others weren’t
obligated to help her.
“Alright, I won’t bother you with this. You don’t have to tell Drew either. Just forget about it.” Pearl was
about to hang up when Sean dropped a bombshell.
