Chapter 448
Although she was speaking to Jerome, she was actually rejecting Kieran.
The look on Kieran’s face changed.
Jerome, who was observant of others’ reactions, immediately jumped to Kieran’s aide. “Inez, an
engagement isn’t the same as a marriage. You can still date after getting engaged and only get
registered after both of you are willing to. It won’t affect anything.”
“But I don’t want to date. Too many unhappy things happened over the past years. I’m really in no
mood to date. All I want to do is to focus on my work and be prepared to take over Mossey
Corporation.”
With that, she turned around and left the living room without looking back.
The sound of a door slamming came from upstairs. Once again, silence filled the living room.
Madelyn and Jerome exchanged a look before turning their gazes toward Kieran.
Kieran lowered his gaze. He seemed to be thinking about something, but no one could figure out his
emotions.
Madelyn asked carefully, “Do you like Inez, Mr. Kieran?”
“Yes,” replied Kieran gently, “but I have hurt her with my previous action. I understand if she’s unwilling
to accept me.”
Madelyn said, “We’ve been spoiling Inez ever since she was a child. She has a very stubborn
personality. If you sincerely like her and wish to be together with her, I can help you convince her.”
Upon deliberation, Kieran thought that it was too embarrassing and troublesome. “It’s fine. This is
between me and Inez. If you persuade her, I’m afraid she’ll resent me even more. I can wait if she’s
unwilling to go ahead with the engagement. She waited a year for me in the past. I can wait another
year for her this time.”
Madelyn and Jerome were glad to hear that.
Madelyn said, “Don’t worry, Mr. Kieran. Although I won’t deliberately try to persuade her, I can create
opportunities for both of you to meet.”
Kieran raised his head and met her gaze. This time, he did not refuse.
A few hours later, Madelyn knocked on Inez’s door.
“It’s time for dinner. Hurry up! We’re waiting for you.”
“All right!”
Sitting in front of her computer, Inez finished typing the last sentence of the proposal before massaging
her sore shoulders and heading downstairs.
She did not notice anything strange until she walked to the dining room.
Kieran was the only one sitting at the long dining table.
Madelyn and Jerome were nowhere to be seen. and on the dining table, there were candles burning.
Evidently, they were deliberately trying to create a chance for Kieran and her to have a candlelight
dinner together.
Mom and Dad have nothing better to do.
She shook her head exasperatedly, turned around, and left.
When Kieran saw that she was about to leave, he jumped to his feet and grabbed her wrist.
“Inez, you probably can tell how much effort Mr. and Mrs. Mossey put into this. Why don’t we have a
talk?”
Inez remained expressionless. “There’s nothing for us to talk about.”
She wanted to leave, but Kieran tightened his grip on her wrist.
Kieran stared at his hand, which was holding her wrist, and smiled faintly. “You came to the hospital in
Salinsburgh the previous time to bid me farewell. Seeing how sad you were, I wanted to reach out and
console you. However, I didn’t even manage to extend my hand. This time, I’m glad that I didn’t let go
of your hand.”
Inez sighed. “What’s the point of saying this now?”
Kieran pulled her up slightly, making her meet his gaze. In a serious tone, he said, “Percy isn’t a good
man. Now that I have canceled this engagement that you had no say in, you have the freedom to
choose. Isn’t that good?”
Inez became angry when he mentioned that. “You deliberately let the police bring him to the Mossey
residence and listened to him mock me. Are you trying to make a joke out of me on purpose? Do you
want me to realize that no other man but you will like me, the Mossey family’s cheap daughter?”
As she complained, tears streamed down her cheeks.
To prevent herself from being bullied at work, she had always maintained an image of a strong,
independent woman. As time passed, she had become much more stubborn as well.
She had suffered a blow that afternoon when she saw how much Percy looked down on her and the
Mossey family. Furthermore, all the drama was exposed right in front of Kieran.
Kieran took a piece of tissue and wiped her tears. Having been taught a lesson after smudging her
eyeliner the previous time, he was very careful and gentle this time.
Treyton had taught him a lot beforehand, such as how to sweet-talk and coax girls.
Even if a cheesy and cliche pick-up line sounded awkward, girls would be happy as long as the man
said it with all his sincerity.
He racked his brain carefully to remember one of the lines that Treyton had taught him.
However, perhaps due to his nervousness, he could not even remember a single one.
Despite his sincere wish to console her, all that he could say was, “Inez, I… I didn’t mean that…”

Kieran felt a bit embarrassed. Taking advantage of her lifted spirits, he quickly said, “I don’t have much
experience with relationships, so I can’t say sweet words. However, I want to tell you that I’m earnestly
trying to win you back. There are no other ulterior motives involved. You went all the way from Fairlake
to Lightspring just to pursue me. Then, you secretly went from Lightspring to Salinsburgh. For an entire
year, your dad had to repeatedly plead with you to return to Mossey Corporation and helm it. Yet, you
turned down all his pleas for my sake. This time, I’ll be the one pursuing you. If you insist on rejecting
the engagement, I’ll pursue you for an entire year just like what you’ve done. Even two years is fine
with me.”
His words were simple yet genuine.
Inez would be lying if she said that she was not affected at all.
Staring at him seriously, she smirked playfully and pridefully. “Sure! Pursue me, then. If you succeed in
pursuing me for a year, I’ll think about it again.”
“Okay. I won’t give up.”
Delighted, Kieran hugged her tightly.
Upon feeling his rapid heartbeat, which revealed how nervous yet happy he was, Inez was slightly
stunned. After struggling for a while, she eventually reached out and embraced him and patted his
broad back.
Madelyn and Jerome, who were watching them silently on the second floor, exchanged a look and
smiled.
Meanwhile, at Harrick Villa, Gwendolyn slept all the way till dinner.
She was woken up by the fragrance of risotto.
When she opened her eyes in a daze, she saw Cedrick sitting beside the bed and gently blowing on a
bowl of risotto.
She sat up and asked, “Why didn’t you sleep for a while longer?”
“I can’t fall asleep because I keep thinking that you’ll need me any time. It’s better to be awake.”
When he felt that the bowl of risotto was no longer hot, he scooped a spoonful and brought it to her
lips. “Careful. It’s hot.”
Gwendolyn opened her mouth and chewed on it, enjoying his thoughtful service.
Cedrick said, “Oh, right, the Newton family has announced Jennifer’s identity. They’ll be hosting a
homecoming feast for her seven days later. She’ll officially change her name to Jennifer Newton then.”
“Has everything been decided?”
Cedrick nodded. “Yes.”
It’s good that she gets to reveal that she actually comes from a wealthy family.
However, remembering what Jennifer had told her in private at the business gala last night, Gwendolyn
could not help but feel that something fishy was going on.
