Chapter 443

The business gala scheduled for that evening was held on the ninety-eighth floor of Salinsburgh’s

tallest building, Summit Hotel, attracting various prominent and influential figures from the business

community in Salinsburgh to attend the event.

As Gwendolyn and Cedrick entered the place hand in hand, Craig happened to arrive with Jennifer

from the elevator on the other end.

The two parties bumped into each other at the entrance.

Since Cedrick was Craig’s superior in the Federal Bureau of Investigation, the latter reckoned he still

needed to show some respect toward the man. He bowed and greeted politely, “Good evening, Mr.

Jenson.”

Cedrick nodded with a cold and indifferent demeanor, acknowledging the greeting.

Jennifer was about to rush to Gwendolyn’s side when Craig pulled her back, stating, “Jennifer, there

are so many people watching. You should be mindful of your etiquette.”

With her desire to have a private conversation with Gwendolyn thwarted, Jennifer could only hang her

head in frustration.

Seeing that, Gwendolyn released her grip on Cedrick’s arm and walked over to hold her best friend’s

hand. She shot an apologetic look at Craig and said, “Mr. Craig, I hope you can spare Jennifer a few

minutes to accompany me to the restroom. You’re a magnanimous man. I’m sure you won’t refuse

such an easy request, right?”

Craig narrowed his eyes in response and cast a fleeting glance at Cedrick. He smiled and acquiesced,

“But of course. Since you require Jennifer’s presence, Mrs. Jenson, it would be impolite of me to deny

you that.”

With his agreement, Gwendolyn swiftly led Jennifer away, leaving the two men to wait at the entrance.

It wasn’t until the women were far away that Gwendolyn asked, “How did you end up coming with

Craig? Did you return to the Newton residence?”

Jennifer nodded. “I did. After much consideration, I decided to try and integrate myself into the Newton

family. After all, it’s where I belong.”

Gwendolyn patted her hand and comforted, “Well, I think it’s good that you’ve gone back. You were a

noblewoman, to begin with, and it was a twist of fate that led you to all this suffering. Now that you’re

back with the Newton family, you won’t be alone anymore, and you’ll have a group of brothers and

sisters by your side.”

Jennifer’s expression turned somewhat grim when Gwendolyn mentioned her siblings.

Recalling the matter concerning Caylie, she grasped Gwendolyn’s hand. “I noticed something strange

at home during these past few days. On the day my mother joined us for a meal, her sleeves rolled up

accidentally, and I saw red marks on her wrist. It’s obvious she’s injured.”

She continued, “Anyway, for the next two days, I didn’t see my mother again since Craig didn’t come

home. I have a feeling she didn’t want to see me either because her attitude toward me was cold and

distant, and she only exchanged a few polite words with me out of respect for Craig. Gwendolyn, many

strange things are happening in the Newton residence, but I can’t tell anyone about it because my

phone was taken away by Craig under some lame excuse. That’s why I need you to tell Trey about

these matters. I’m sure he’ll help me look into this.”

Gwendolyn listened attentively and patted her best friend’s hand reassuringly again when she was

done. “Don’t worry. I’ll definitely tell Treyton about this in detail.” She pursed her lips. “What could be

the reason for Craig to allow his own mother to get injured, though? After all, he is the current head of

the Newton family and Caylie’s biological son.”

After contemplating for a moment, Jennifer shook her head and uttered, “The top floor where my

mother resides is always locked at night. I plan to wait until Craig lets his guard down before going up

to investigate the situation.”

“Be careful, okay?”

“I will.”

The two exchanged a few more words before heading back.

Cedrick and Craig were still waiting at the entrance for their respective partners.

The latter was the first to break the silence. “You’re such a lucky man, Mr. Jenson. Not only do you

have a doting wife by your side and two adorable children, but your career hasn’t suffered any setbacks

either.”

Cedrick’s gaze turned cold when he heard that. “It sounds like you’re looking forward to my career

being damaged. But I wonder which one you are referring to. Is it Jenson Group or the Federal Bureau

of Investigation?”

“Surely you jest, Mr. Jenson. I wouldn’t dare to wish you ill. After all, your prosperous life guarantees

mine to be smooth sailing as well,” Craig replied with a touch of fear in his tone as he bowed slightly.

Training his disdainful gaze at the man’s pretentious act, Cedrick couldn’t be bothered to expose him

and simply said, “I hope you can live up to your words. Even if you can’t, it won’t matter because you

lack the capability to trip me up.”

Craig’s expression stiffened at that, but he quickly regained his composure and plastered a smile on his

face, exuding an air of deference.

As the tense conversation between the two men came to an end, Gwendolyn and Jennifer returned

that moment.

Subsequently, the two pairs entered the venue one after the other.

The moment they entered, Jennifer was led by Craig to meet with several business tycoons. He

seemed to be helping her expand her network.

Watching from afar, Gwendolyn came to the conclusion that everything seemed fine, so she stopped

her observation and focused on meeting her business associates at the banquet, taking the opportunity

to discuss potential collaborations.

As the evening progressed, Jennifer found herself being pulled by Craig to toast with numerous

prominent business figures. After downing ten glasses of red wine, she started feeling a bit tipsy.

When another glass was offered to her, she declined, “Craig, I can’t drink anymore. I don’t want to drink

anymore.”

Craig did not insist on it and instead apologized to the man before them, Remus Abbot, before taking

the drink on behalf of Jennifer.

He turned his head with a smile and asked, “Jennifer, what do you think of Mr. Abbot?”

Standing opposite them, Remus listened in on their conversation with a self-assured smile playing at

the corner of his lips. Evidently, he thought highly of himself.

Jennifer glanced at the man and noticed that he was already approaching forty. Even though Remus

could be considered good-looking among middle-aged men, he still paled in comparison to Treyton.

She lowered her head and replied absentmindedly, “Mr. Abbot is a talented individual with remarkable

charisma. It’s evident that he’s an experienced player in the business field.”

Delight coursed through Remus after he heard her praise.

He remarked confidently, “You have a keen eye, Ms. Jennifer. Actually, in addition to these qualities, I

am also a caring and considerate man.”

As he spoke, he reached out to touch Jennifer’s fair hand.

Realizing his intention, Jennifer swiftly hid behind Craig, her face slightly flushed with wariness.

“Mr. Abbot, I’m currently in a relationship. If my boyfriend finds out about your actions, he won’t be

pleased,” she said with a firm tone.

Remus forced a smile and reluctantly withdrew his hand, feeling somewhat embarrassed.

After Remus left, Craig asked Jennifer in a low voice, “Between Mr. Abbot and Treyton, who do you

think is more suitable to be your future husband, Jennifer?”

“What do you mean by that?” Jennifer took a step back instantly, looking at him in disbelief. “I’m already

in a relationship with Treyton. Why would you ask such a question?”

Flashing a smile, Craig replied, “Why are you so nervous? It was just a casual inquiry. To be honest

with you, Mr. Abbot did approach me yesterday and mentioned that if you were to get married to him, novelbin

he would offer fifteen percent of shares from Abbot Group as part of the wedding gifts. But I haven’t

given him an answer yet.”

Jennifer did not believe him and took another step back, keeping her distance from him.

“It doesn’t matter if it’s ten percent or fifteen percent, for none of it means anything to me. If you dare

agree to his proposal, I will sever all ties with the Newton family!” Jennifer had a firm stance on this

matter. “If you insist on using your sister as a sacrificial pawn in a business alliance, you can get

Jasmine to do it instead. I am already with Treyton, and that’s that.”

Craig shook his head helplessly and started analyzing the pros and cons for her. “Although the Harris

family is better than the Abbot family, Gwendolyn is the one who holds the reins of Harris Group. This

means that even if Treyton genuinely wants to marry you, it’s impossible for him to offer even ten

percent of Harris Group’s shares. After all, he doesn’t have the authority to make such a decision.”

Jennifer stared at her so-called brother in shock and seethed, “Are the shares more important than

your sister’s lifelong happiness? Even if Treyton can’t offer Harris Group’s shares, he will never

mistreat me when it comes to wedding gifts. Is that why you brought me to the business gala? To

introduce me to your business partners and trade me for shares? Are you trying to sell me off to

someone else?”
