Chapter 1564

"You have a cold, so you can't eat meat. Your recovery will be slow if you do," Ernest remindedLeah.

"I just want to eat meat." Leah muttered.

Ernest shook his head and laughed at Leah.

Leah gazed at Ernest with a yearning look in her eyes, and they flicked over to her lips. She lookedinto his eyes, and she was determined to have Ernest.

She was sure that she was going to devour him one of these days.

She would not hold back.

Then, Ernest went to get the knife and the chopping board.

Leah was very surprised when she saw Ernest cut the raw meat into delicate cubes before feedingit to the turtles. "How did you know turtles could eat raw meat?"

"Turtles are omnivores. You can feed them cooked eggs, nuts and shrimp."

"I gave them crayfish and dam shrimp to eat. I can't even afford to eat dam shrimp, but I feed it tothem," Leah sighed sadly.

"What do you mean you can't afford it?" Ernest felt rather distressed. Why did she say that?

"Well, I'm poor," Leah replied straightforwardly.

Then, Ernest said, "After you're recovered, I'll take you to have some."

"Ernest, will you support me when I have no money in the future?" Leah probed inquisitively.

Startled, Ernest said, "Sure, I'll support you."

His reply came without hesitation.

Leah was rather shocked, and she asked sheepishly, "What if your wife says no?"

Ernest gave her a meaningful stare and said, "Don't worry, she'll be fine with it."

He actually meant that he wanted Leah to be his wife.

However, to Leah, it sounded like another possibility.

Ernest would seek out another woman to be his wife.

Then, her interest in the conversation evaporated into thin air and she became disappointed.

She forced a smile at Ernest. "You're someone who really values friendship. I hope we'll still befriends when you get married."

"We will be friends for the rest of our lives." Ernest felt that some couples were also best friends aswell as partners.

However, it sounded different to Leah.

It meant that Ernest would marry someone else in the future.

Her chest ached painfully.

It hurt so much that she nearly couldn't breathe.

She felt very uncomfortable.

Then, Leah took a deep breath.

Ernest was feeding the turtles with a serious look on his face. "Feeding the turtles a little bit of meatevery few days will be very nutritious. Remember to feed them every day, but not too much. They'llfall sick if you do."

"Oh, so that's how it is. I didn't expect you to know this." Leah's eyes were filled with complexemotions when she looked at Ernest.

It was both admiration and loss.

He was an amazing man, and yet he was not interested in her.

She refused to ask any more questions as she was afraid that the answer would kill her.

Ernest gave her a gentle smile and got up to clean up the area. "Go to bed. I'll join you in a bit. Youneed to sleep more as it'll be good for your health." "Yeah, I'll just go lie down." Leah walked off tothe bedroom.

As soon as the door closed behind her, her shoulders slumped and Leah nearly cried.

She hated herself.

She had been reading too much into the situation the whole time.

Leah became ever sadder at this realisation, and she buried her face in the pillow.

Ernest saw her like this when he entered the room and asked, "What's wrong? Are you feelingunwell?"

"It's nothing, Ernest. Nothing at all." Leah shook her head.

Ernest walked over to her. Worry began to fill his chest as Leah refused to move. "What's wrong? Why are you so sad?"

Leah was heartbroken!

Now, she knew what it felt to have unrequited feelings for someone, and it was very upsetting.

Hence, she remained silent and motionless on the bed.

Ernest was puzzled. "This isn't like you. You've always been very active."

"Well, the old Leah is dead. This is me now. Come on up and lie down with me." She rubbed at herown face. She still wanted to sleep next to Ernest even if he didn't fancy her. At least this way hewould never forget her.

In the future, he would remember that he had once slept with a girl.

It was a very malicious way of thinking.

Alas, that was what she was thinking of.

Ernest didn't know what was wrong with Leah. He just felt that it was odd why she suddenly becameso dispirited.

He lay down, patted her on the shoulder, and gently said, "Leah, what's wrong with you?"

Leah stiffened and replied, "Nothing. I just feel uncomfortable."

Ernest nodded in understanding. "I told you so."

Leah felt an overwhelming urge to jump into his embrace.

Nevertheless, she managed to control herself.

At this time, her phone suddenly rang.

She was stunned and hurried to answer the phone.

A voice sounded from the other end. "Hey! Where the hell are you? Why haven't you visited thehospital?"

Leah paused for a moment before replying, "I'm ill, so I can't bring myself to go."

Leah thought the caller would stop after that, but instead they sneered. "You're sick? I'm surprisedyou're not dead."

That sentence was so loud that Ernest heard it right away.

He was shocked. The caller was so rude!

Ernest frowned and he looked at Leah. However, she was very calm as if she'd faced this rudecaller plenty of times before.

His eyes narrowed as Leah replied, "I'm sorry to disappoint you, but I'm still alive."

A woman's sarcastic sneer came from the other side. "Before you die, get yourself some lifeinsurance and name me as the beneficiary."

Leah laughed again. "I don't think I ever will. You don't deserve to get any money from me."

"You wh*re."

"I'm hanging up now." Leah hung up the phone immediately.

Ernest was shocked.

He stared blankly at Leah.

On the other hand, she smiled at him and said, "I'm sorry. I scared you, didn't I?"

Ernest shot her a complicated look. His gaze was filled with pain and worry.novelbin

She smiled and comforted him. "Don't look at me like that. I can't stand it when people pity me. Thisis my stepmother, and she's rather mean to me. It's fine, stepmothers are always like this."

All of a sudden, Ernest's heart ached.

Leah's family situation was complicated as well.

For a moment, he didn't know what to say. He noticed that she was pretending to be calm. She wassick, but she still got yelled at.

He had the sudden urge to hold her in his arms.

"Leah." Ernest's voice was hoarse, and there was obvious heartache in his tone.

"Hmm?" Leah looked at him and laughed at his pained look. "Hey, what's this? Are you pitying menow? Don't do that."

This only made Ernest even more distressed.

However, Leah comforted Ernest even harder and she forced a wider smile. Even though therewere tears swimming in her eyes, she did not let them fall. This upset Ernest greatly.

At last, Ernest reached out and hugged Leah tightly.

Leah was shocked as she lay in his arms. The both of them lay in bed hugging. Although this hugwas free of any desire, it was very precious to Leah.

Her heart was flooded with hope once again.

Ernest's hug made her get her hopes up once again.

He'd stirred up the emotions in her chest, and they were at a fever-pitch. Hence, she was throwninto a disarray.

His hug was warm, and he seemed to want to merge Leah into his body with how tightly he washugging her.

Leah's eyes widened and she wanted to speak. However, she didn't say anything in the endbecause she didn't want to ruin the moment.

However, her rational mind told her not to indulge in his embrace for too long. He was a good man,and he was just upset for her as a friend should be.

"I'm fine, Ernest. What are you doing? I'm not that fragile, you know?"

Leah still tried to comfort Ernest.

Ernest held Leah in his arms. His heartache was extremely apparent in his chest.

"Don't say anything," Ernest replied, and his voice was low.

He was afraid that he wouldn't be able to stop himself from kissing Leah if she said anything else.

The pain in his chest was suffocating, and it made him want to embrace and kiss her. At least hewould be able to comfort Leah that way.
