Donna and Ethan sat in the car. Donna had always been defiant. In the past, she never backed downeven when the two had argued and given each other the silent treatment.
Ethan had always been the first to back down. In fact, Ethan wavered when Donna knelt down. Donnastubbornly looked out the window.
“My parents’ wellbeing is none of your business. Mr. Arnold, you’re already engaged, so you better notlet your fiancee hear of this. We should keep our distance.”novelbin
Ethan looked straight ahead and focused on the road, “Remind me who shamelessly declared at theArnold residence that she was going to be Mrs. Arnold again? You don’t need to put on an act in frontof me.”
Donna gritted her teeth and said, “Do you think I’d go to the Arnold residence and face your grandma’sjudgment if it weren’t for Robin? Besides, it’s not like you ever cared about our son in the past, so youdon’t need to start now. Anyway, just drop us off by the road. I’ll go home on my own after this.”
Ethan’s gaze turned frosty. Then, he said icily, “I’ll have my lawyer draft up a contract for the custody ofour son. You won’t win against me. The court won’t grant custody to a mother who’s not mentally fit.”
Donna chuckled icily.
“So you plan on letting Madelyn Jent raise him? Are you going to ask Robin to call a stranger hismother? Don’t act like I’m fucking six feet under, Ethan! So what if I’m not mentally fit?! Are you anybetter? Don’t forget you’re a lunatic too!”
Donna’s words hit home. Ethan was, in fact, a lunatic. Donna turned to look at Ethan with a mildlycreepy smile.
“Haven’t you realized, Ethan? Robin’s just like you back then,” she said coolly. She continued, “AndMadelyn… She’s like Sylvia. Don’t forget how Sylvia tore your family apart. In the future, Madelyn willbe just like Sylvia and tear us apart just like she did.”
“Shut up!” Ethan said as he slammed the brakes. Donna shielded her son’s head and almost hurtherself.
“Am I wrong? Were we at fault back then? If anything, your grandmother was at fault. If it weren’t forher, we would’ve gotten together long ago, and Robin wouldn’t have had to go through all this.”
Ethan said, “Madelyn is not like Sylvia and never will be. On the other hand, you’ll never compare toher. She isn’t deceitful and manipulative like you.”
Then, Ethan drove the two to a private hospital, which was one of the Arnold family’s investments.Robin was taken into an examination room. Ethan made a call. After he was done, he walked up toDonna.
“Our stance is evident. There’s no way we’re letting the child stay by your side. I’ve already sent abodyguard to care for him. In the future, you’re not to come to the hospital without my permission,” hesaid coldly as he took out a 4 million dollar check. He continued, “This amount is sufficient for you toremarry and last you an entire lifetime.”
“Don’t you even think about it,” Donna looked at him with bloodshot eyes and tore the check intopieces.
However, Ethan did not seem surprised by Donna’s actions. He simply watched her as she actedhysterically. Finally, he spoke in a cold voice.
“You’ve never loved me. All you’ve ever wanted was to be Mrs. Arnold. Would you still cling to me likethis if I weren’t the CEO of the Arnold Corporation?”
Donna was stunned. Ethan continued, “Not every relationship needs an outcome. Madelyn is thewoman I’ve chosen. And you… You were just someone who appeared at the right time to give mesome warmth. Back when we were young, I treated the minuscule kindness that you showed me as myeverything.
Our encounter was a mistake from the very start, and I’m still paying for our mistakes. I’ve beenparalyzed after I got into that car accident for you. I’ve gone for physiotherapy and stood up againbecause of her, and what I’m doing now is also for her. Letting the child return to the Arnold family isthe biggest concession I can make. However, you will never be Mrs. Arnold.
With that, Ethan stuck one hand into his pocket and walked away. Meanwhile, Donna’s knees gave outas she collapsed onto the ground and the light in her eyes completely went out.
