“Okay,” Ethan replied. Madelyn said, “You should take a shower and get some sleep. The smell isn’tpleasant.”

“Just let me hold you a little longer,” Ethan requested. Madelyn thought she really should get somesleep, or she would struggle to wake up tomorrow. She closed her eyes, feeling a weight lifted off herchest, and soon drifted off.

Two hours later, in a drowsy state, someone turned her over. She smelled a faint, refreshing scent ofshower gel and immediately fell back asleep. Three days flew by, and it was soon time for the exam.

On a scorching day, the entrance to Ventropolis High School was crowded with parents, all chatteringnervously. They were all eagerly awaiting this important day. Ethan turned to Madelyn and said, “Doyour best. I’ll pick you up when it’s over. ”

“Got it.”

Suddenly, the blaring horn of a bus broke through her thoughts. As it came to a halt and its doorsswung open, Madelyn cast a backward glance. As she was about to resume her path, a face from herpast froze her in place. She was startled, her face turning pale.
