Madelyn felt like Forrest had a point. She hadn’t really planned on buying so many street snacks all atonce. After thinking it over, she decided to hold off on getting more and focus on enjoying the ones shealready had. She realized she might have gone a bit overboard with her shopping.

She turned her head slightly and glanced at Forrest, who was completely absorbed in the fireworks, hiseyes reflecting the sparkling lights. Forrest also turned to look at her. Madelyn said, “I think it’s abouttime for me to head out.”
“I can give you a ride.” She smiled and declined, “It’s alright, I’ll grab a taxi later. You should go hometoo and not miss dinner with your family.”
He thought, ‘Family dinner… truth is, it doesn’t mean much to me anymore.’ Then he said, “Sure, let’sgo.”

Madelyn answered sincerely, “So, what am I supposed to assume? You know about his ex-girlfriend,right? The girl he was ready to defend with his life.”
