Chapter 172

Mentally challenged? Artemis stopped and stared at Bailey with confusion. Is Maxton's condition thatserious? So much so that he's going to become mentally challenged?

When Felicity saw her son had arrived, she flung Bailey's arm away and threw herself into her son'sembrace, crying at the top of her lungs, “I let her treat my precious grandson, but now she's telling mehe's going to become mentally challenged! There's no justice in this world!”

His eyebrows became intensely furrowed as he pushed his mother into Simon's embrace. “Whathappened?” he asked Bailey. “How did Max become mentally challenged? He didn't show any signs ofthat before, so why did this suddenly happen?”

The look in Bailey's eyes was icy cold. Even though she was verbally abused by Felicity, she could stillsuppress the rage in her heart completely.

When she heard his questioning, she could not help but sneer, “I was being stupid last night. I shouldn'thave come forward and volunteered to jump into this mess. Perhaps you should hire another expert,Mr. Luther. I can't afford to bear this sin.”

Her words stunned Artemis, and only then did he realize he had spoken inappropriately.

Glancing at the still-enraged Felicity, he dragged Bailey to the side and apologized, “I'm sorry. I wasgetting a little too emotional earlier. I have no intention of blaming you, so don't get angry, okay? Nomatter what happens, I'm grateful that you were willing to help save my family members. Without you, they would've been in a far worse condition.”

Shaking her head, Bailey suppressed the anger caused by Felicity's provocation and sighed. “I'm just

saying that's the worst-case scenario. As for what'll actually happen, we need to wait until he wakes upfirst. I analyzed the genes in his brain and found out that he was given a drug that disturbs a person'snervous system. That is why I said there's a chance he may become mentally challenged.”

“So you're saying you're not sure what'll happen?”

The woman shook her head. “It doesn't matter what I speculate, because unless he wakes up, I won'thave the data required to provide a proper diagnosis. We'll see how he does when he wakes up.Hopefully, my conclusion will be wrong.”

“Don't stress yourself out too much.” Artemis held her weak shoulders and stared at her warmly, smiling. “It'll all depend on him whether he'll pull through.”

“Mhm.” She then changed the subject. “I've examined his body thoroughly, and I didn't find out whatdrug caused his nervous system to deteriorate. There were no signs of drug injection when I tested hisblood, either.”

A brief silence ensued before Artemis asked tentatively, “Could it have been mixed into his drink orfood?”

“That's impossible.” Bailey shook her head. “I've examined the residuals in his stomach. There are nosigns of drugs that can weaken a person's nervous system there.”

His eyes narrowed with a subtle hostile look. His eyebrows were also furrowing, so much so that theyturned into a unibrow. “Any guesses?”

Staring at the light brown shirt he was wearing, Bailey fell into deep thought.

Upon following her line of sight, he saw she was staring at the suit on his chest and raised his eyebrow. Is this woman admiring my muscular body? Is she enjoying it?

In the next second, he shook his head and his thoughts away. “Are you thinking someone might'vesprayed the drug onto his shirt, causing him to breathe it in and affect his brain?”

Bailey agreed with her silence.

Seeing how she was not saying a word, he continued, “I'll ask someone to run a test on Maxton's shirtand see if they can find any clues.”

When he finished speaking, he turned around, preparing to walk away.

Bailey swiftly grabbed his arm, shaking her head at him with a sigh. “If someone really did poison him, then they certainly wouldn't leave any traces of their crime. Some drugs automatically lose theireffectiveness after twenty-four hours. It had been more than twenty-four hours since I operated on OldMr. Chivers. It's pointless to do that now.”

Halting his steps, he glanced at her. “So the people who poisoned him weren't targeting Old Mr.Chivers. They're targeting you.”

With a nod, she answered in a hoarse voice, “I'm sorry. I dragged Old Mr. Chivers into my mess andmade him suffer. You're probably right that the people who poisoned both of them are gunning for me.They want my reputation to go down the drain.”

Artemis was a smart man, so he instantly connected many dots in his mind when he heard that. “Iheard Cadence had a grudge against you in the past. Back then, he wanted Cataleya to take him in asa student, but you were quicker. He has hated you since then for that reason.”

“That's right,” Bailey confirmed without hesitation. “The moment he knew I was Anonymous, I bet hewanted to flay me alive immediately. I'm more than certain he's not going to let go of any opportunity totake me down, but I'm only eighty to ninety percent sure he's the one who poisoned Max.”

A violent look flashed past Artemis' eyes. novelbin

After all, his son was hurt, badly. Obviously, as a father, he was not going to sit still after guessing theperpetrator's identity. “It's a shame that he's very good at covering his tracks. We can't trail it back tohim.”

“I don't think he's that good,” Bailey sneered. “If his first plan didn't work out, he'll certainly come up witha second plan. We just need to find the right opportunity to force his hand.”

When her words fell, she blinked at him. It was rare for her to act like a mischievous girl.

“I heard Cohen Pharmaceutical, a subsidiary of Luther Group, has been researching an anti-cancerdrug recently. However, they got stuck and couldn't progress further. The rest of the world has beeneagerly waiting for the drug to be released, so a lot of people are paying attention to it. How about youhelp me ask the people at Drug Administration to let me join the development of the drug?” shesuggested.

Artemis' eyebrow was raised as he instantly understood what she was planning to do. Staring at hermischievous smile, he briefly entered a daze.

This woman does have a feminine side to her. It's just that the weight on her shoulders has increasedover the years, and the pressure forced her to hide her true self, turning her cold and indifferent.

His intense gaze was making her feel uncomfortable, so she shot him a vicious glare and spat, “Whatare you staring at? Never seen a hottie before?”

The smile on his face became brighter. “I've seen plenty of hotties before, but none could enter myheart like you.”

The woman was rendered speechless.

So he's flirting instead of spouting tawdry remarks now? Godd*mn, that line was so corny that I gotgoosebumps.

“Mr. Luther, Ms. Jefferson, Mr. Maxton has woken up.” A polite report was delivered verbally frombehind their backs, which shattered the amorous atmosphere the two were experiencing.

Thank goodness.

“I'll check up on him right now!” Bailey exclaimed before running away.

Inside the ward stood Felicity, Simon, Caridee, Zayron, and Susan. They were all staring wide-eyed atMaxton, who was curling into a ball on the bed.

Upon entering the room, Bailey could feel something was wrong.

With furrowed eyebrows, she turned to Zayron and asked, “What's wrong with Max?”

The boy rigidly pointed at his own head with a bitter expression.
