Chapter 140

Bailey shook her head and said with a smile, “Had it not been for your grandpa, my mom and grannywould've frozen to death on the streets back then. I wouldn't even exist. Edmund, I understand that Ineed to repay your grandpa for saving them, so will you give me a week to overcome my trauma?”

“Is Cadence really unable to perform this surgery?” Edmund asked after a brief pause. novelbin

“That's right. I know full well just how capable he is. A complicated surgery like this is simply too muchfor him,” Bailey replied without any hesitation.

“All right, I trust your judgment. I know you're the only one who won't try to harm my grandpa. A week itis, then. I'll do my best to stall the surgery, but I need you to promise me you won't force yourself toomuch. It'd be great if you could overcome your trauma, but it'll also be fine if you can't. Whatever theoutcome may be, I shall accept it as Grandpa's fate.”

Bailey forced a smile at him in response. “I know. Don't worry. If all else fails, I'll have a hypnotisttemporarily erase my memories of the incident from three years ago.”

Edmund glared at her sternly as he shouted, “No way! Hypnosis is incredibly damaging to the brain, sodon't even think about doing that! I'll call off the surgery if you dare attempt such a crazy stunt, youhear?”

Bailey was so taken aback by his sudden outburst that she froze for a few seconds. Whoa... I didn'tthink a gentle and soft-spoken guy like Edmund was capable of being so aggressive...

“It's just a suggestion... I wasn't actually planning on going through with it. What are you getting soworked up for?”

“Bailey...” Edmund muttered her name through clenched teeth.

Bailey had no choice but to give in. “All right, all right! I won't even think about it anymore, okay?”

“Do you need me to provide you with a laboratory?” Edmund asked.

Bailey shook her head. “That won't be necessary. Vero's laboratory is pretty big and well-equipped. It'dtake too much time for you to import all those equipment.”

Just like that, Bailey spent the next six days trying to overcome her fear of the operating table inVeronique's laboratory.

Unfortunately, the outcome remained the same each time.

The gory scene from three years ago would replay in her head whenever she picked up the scalpel, which resulted in her losing her cool.

Her hand trembled like crazy as she cut at the animal's flesh with the scalpel, and she broke down themoment she saw the blood oozing out of the carcass.

There were a few times when she either threw up violently at the scent of blood or fainted on the spot.

Veronique described her actions as a form of self-harm.

It was true that her repeatedly forcing herself to face her trauma seemed like self-harm, but she didn't

have much of a choice in that matter.

“Ms. Bailey has gone missing for six days now, and none of my calls are getting through. Mr. Luther, the launch of our new product cannot be delayed any longer. LG Corporation has called us many timesdemanding that we give them the sample so they can come up with a promotion plan as soon aspossible,” Dwayne said as he entered the CEO's office of Luther Group.

Artemis looked up at him from a stack of documents and replied coldly, “Bailey took two weeks off, soshe won't be coming back to work for a while. You can have Victoria take care of the launch of our newproduct instead. Bailey was halfway done with the project before she left, so I don't want to let anyoneelse handle it. Victoria is a good friend of hers, so I believe she won't pull dirty tricks to stab her in theback.”

Hmm... That does seem to be the only viable option right now...

With that in mind, Dwayne said, “All right. I'll go look for Victoria in the HR department and have hercome see you.”

“Oh, and have Ken come in as well while you're at it. There's something I need to talk to him about.”

“Noted.”

Moments later, Ken came in through the door and asked, “Yes, Mr. Luther?”

Artemis tossed his pen aside and leaned back lazily in his chair as he asked, “How is that womandoing? Is she still in Veronique's laboratory?”

“Yes. She hasn't left since she entered six days ago,” Ken replied with a nod.

“Six days, huh... Each day probably felt like a year for her. She wishes to return the favor, but fate tookaway her ability to use the scalpel. I bet she must be drowning in despair and disappointment right now.Ken, what do you think I should do for her?” Artemis said.

How the heck would I know the answer to that question?

Despite his thoughts, Ken replied, “You've done plenty for her already, Mr. Luther. You've been visitingpsychologists in hopes of finding out how she can overcome her trauma. If I recall, the doctors say astrong stimulus is needed for her to recover. I think I might have an idea.”

“Oh? And what would that be?”

“We could cut open her son's head. Who knows? Her desire to save her son's life might just help herovercome her trauma.”

The corner of Artemis' lips twitched slightly when he heard that.

Wow... This is quite a crazy idea, but it might just do the trick!

“Very well, then. Have a bunch of thugs kidnap her son and make a cut on his head. There's no wayshe'd just sit by and watch her son die.”

Ken stared wide-eyed at him in disbelief. “W-What? Are you serious, Mr. Luther? I was just kiddingwhen I said that! That child will die if we cut open his head like that!”

“Come, hear me out on this,” Artemis said while gesturing at him to come closer.

Ken hesitantly did as told and stepped forward. Sure enough, his face turned deathly pale after helistened to Artemis' explanation.

“No, this is far too dangerous! The slightest mistake could result in death!”

Artemis flashed him a faint smile as he said, “If it means helping her recover from this trauma so thatshe can repay the favor like she has always wanted to, then I shall gladly offer up my life. Don't worry;she's a lot tougher than you think. I'm sure she'll be able to make the right decision during the criticalmoment.”

Ken shook his head. “It's good that you have faith in her, but what if she fails to overcome her trauma? There will be no one around to perform that surgery on you! You'll die, Mr. Luther!”

Artemis rolled his eyes at him. “Then arrange for a few specialists to be in the crowd! They can takeover the surgery if she can't perform it, so you don't have to worry about me dying!”

B-But it's still too risky! There's no guarantee that Ms. Bailey will be able to save his life, especiallysince she can't even use the scalpel. There are simply far too many uncertainties in this plan...

“M-Mr. Luther, how about we come up with another idea?”

“We don't have enough time, so just shut up and do as I say. Get this done by today.”

Meanwhile, in an unassuming mansion in Hallsbay, eerie screams could be heard coming out of thewindow on the second floor.

It went on for a little over an hour.

Rhonda was lying on the icy-cold floor with her clothes all torn while a middle-aged man watched fromthe couch, a satisfied expression on his face.
