Chapter 1727

After Paisley finished cooking, they sat down with Nathan for dinner.

Garrett opened a bottle of wine from his collection and drank with Nathan.

They enjoyed each other's company due to their like-mindedness.

As they chatted, they slowly got to the topic of current affairs.

Garrett asked, “General—”

Nathan interrupted with a smile, “Mr. Woods, since we hit it off so well, let's not stand on ceremony;we should change our form of address.”

Garrett had the same intention so he immediately agreed. “Sure. I shall call you by your first name,Nathan, then.”

“I'll call you Garrett,” Nathan replied with a smile.

Chuckling, Garrett toasted Nathan and then asked, “Nathan, now that the President is about tostand down, what do you think about it?”

“Mr. Windsor just talked to me today and said that my promotion to the Cabinet has failed,” Nathanreplied calmly, “In addition, he said that Clifford is still the frontrunner for the next presidency. Mr.Windsor plans to support Zion so that the latter can compete with Clifford.”

Garrett nodded. “The President's candidate is good. Zion is experienced and prudent.”Contents belong to NovelDrama.Org

Nathan glanced at Garrett. “Is this really what you think, Garrett?”

Seeing that there were only Nathan and his family around and the Captain of National Guards wasoutside, Garrett replied, lowering his voice slightly, “Zion is experienced and prudent, but he's

conservative and lacks boldness.

Moreover, there has never been a precedent for people from the same faction to be President fortwo consecutive terms. I'm afraid the chance is slim for Zion to win the presidential race.”

“Yes, I share the same opinion as you,” Nathan agreed calmly.

“Since you also think that Zion can't compete with Clifford, why don't you talk the President out ofit?” Garrett could not help but ask.

Nathan gave him a wry smile. “Mr. Windsor has made up his mind, so there's no way I could changeit. He won't give up before he tries.”

“On the surface, Clifford is prudent and tolerant, but in fact, he's stern and unforgiving,” statedGarrett. “Having him as President may not be a good thing for the country.”

“Garrett, you should say that it's not a good thing for me because after he takes over, I'll probably bethe first one being targeted by him,” Nathan remarked with a smile.

Garrett grimaced. “Nathan, you're good at everything but sometimes your edge is too sharp, andyou end up offending people easily.”

“I'm a soldier. What kind of soldier would I be if I don't have an edge?” Nathan asserted,“Furthermore, I think neither Zion nor Clifford will win the race.”

Garrett looked at Nathan, surprised by the latter's prediction. “Nathan, I understand it when you saidClifford can't win. But if even Zion, who's backed by the President, can't defeat Clifford, who else iseligible to compete for the position?” “It's hard to say, but the successor will surely be one of theCabinet members. There's no doubt about it. As to who it will be, it's hard to tell now. But I thinkthere's someone with a great chance;

I think he'll win,” Nathan replied calmly.

Feeling curious, Garrett asked, “Who's it?”

“Well, he's right in front of me,” Nathan revealed with a smile.

Hearing this, both Garrett and Paisley were dumbfounded.

What Nathan said shocked Garrett to the core.

He could not believe what he had heard. “Are you talking about me, Nathan?” “Yes, I am,” Nathanaffirmed.

Garrett hurriedly waved his hands. “No way, Nathan, you must be joking. I know full well that I'm notthat competent. I can't even compete with Zion, let alone Clifford. Everyone in the cabinet stands achance, but that definitely doesn't include me.”

Nathan picked up the wine glass and asked with a smile, “Why, Garrett? Do you think you're lessable than they are?”

“Not really,” Garrett replied with a wry smile. “In terms of ability, I'm not inferior to them, andsometimes I even look down on them. Although they're members of the cabinet, they only managedto join the cabinet because of their backgrounds and the support of their sects. I was born in agrass-root family. I started out as a small-time village chief in Horington and have since seen societyfrom the bottom to the creme de la creme, so I have a good grasp on how things are at each level. In terms of ability, I don't

think I'll lose to them.”

“Since you also think you're no worse than they are, why do you have no confidence in yourself?”Nathan asked.

Garrett said with a bitter smile, “Oh, Nathan, are you really confused, or you just pretend you don'tknow? I don't have a say in whether I can be president; I need support from others.”
