Chapter 134

Chapter 134

lan quipped again, “Has she ever made you bleed?” novelbin

“Not at all.” Dawson shook his head immediately. His girlfriend’s punches were nothing more thanplayful love taps. He wasn’t like lan, who was always courting disaster.

lan gave him a knowing look. “Bleeding is a sign of true love, my friend. What you have is more of abed buddy. It’s nothing compared to what Clara and I have.”

Dawson thought to himself, ‘Mr. Hayes, have you no shame? You and Attorney Clara are on theouts. She won’t even give you the time of day, and here you are, still claiming it’s true love?‘

But as a savvy subordinate, Dawson quickly replied with a grin, “Of course, my relationship doesn’thold a candle to the fiery saga between you and Attorney Clara. All

ton–again, off–again passion–that’s real love. My situation is just too bland by comparison.”

lan shot him a glance. “Do I detect a hint of sarcasm?”

“No sarcasm, Mr. Hayes. I’m just stating the cold, hard facts.”

As they were bantering, a tall figure appeared at the doorway.

Ryker strolled in, decked out in casual wear topped with a baseball cap. He leaned against thedoorframe with an easy grin. “Ms. Clara dumped you ages ago, and you’re still clinging to her, lan. Inever knew you were so shameless.”

lan’s gaze met Ryker’s eagle–like eyes as he retorted, “Shameless? Take a look in the mirror. You’re no better than a street rat, a disgrace to your grandfather’s legacy.”

“lan, watch your mouth. Don’t make me come over there and teach you a lesson.”

lan raised an eyebrow. “You? Beat me in a fight? When has that ever happened?”

From childhood to adulthood, Ryker had always been the one to take the fall. Even with years ofmilitary experience, he couldn’t best lan.

Amidst their squabble, Clara returned with medicine in hand. She handed the meds to Dawson, briefly explained the dosage and instructions, and then added, “Make sure he doesn’t get it wetwhen you change the dressing. I’ve got to head back to the firm.”

Suddenly, lan called out to her, “Dawson’s all thumbs. He’ll botch the job. Come over tonight andchange my dressing.”

Clara refused without a second thought, “If you’re not happy with his work, come to the hospital.”

“Clara, you think you can just hit me and walk away?” lan stood up, grabbing her wrist. He wouldn’tmiss this chance to be close to Clara.

Clara’s cold gaze fell upon him. “Why did I hit you, Mr. Hayes? Have you forgotten? It was self–defense at best. Even the best lawyer couldn’t sue me for that.”

A sharp pain pierced lan’s heart. He lowered his voice, “Clara, I just want you to change. mydressing. Otherwise, I’ll have to ask Casey.”

“Tan, can’t we keep our issues between us and not involve others?”

lan’s lips twisted into a bitter smile. “Then come over tonight and help me.”

Without responding, Clara turned and left.

Ryker shot lan a rude gesture before catching up to Clara. He was all bravado moments ago butinstantly softened around Clara. “Ms. Clara, I got you breakfast–your favorite from that spot youlove.”

lan clenched his teeth in frustration. He turned to Dawson with a cold gaze. “The national networkhas been hounding me for an interview, right? Tell them it’s set for 10 a.m. today in my office.”

Dawson looked puzzled. “Mr. Hayes, aren’t you worried about ruining your image? Especially sinceright now you’re-”

lan’s deep eyes shimmered with a hint of defiance. “What’s the big deal about getting hit by yourwoman? It’s not the end of the world.”
