Inheriting the good looks of Natalia and Archie, Anne boasted impressive beauty.
In spite of that, she began to keep a watchful eye on her figure.
Natalia discovered that Anne was secretly cutting down on her diet, shunning meat and taking low-novelbin
calorie vegetables and fruit only.
Natalia was somewhat worried.
She knew that growth and nutrition, instead of appearance, were what mattered most to kids of Anne's
age.
Therefore, Natalia tried all means to feed Anne meat at every meal.
Seeing that she had no choice, Anne ate the meat Natalia gave her.
Then she asked curiously, "Mommy, who is Daddy talking to on the phone?"
Glancing at Anne, Natalia said calmly, "It's nothing to do with you kids."
"All right," Anne replied.
The girl gobbled her food up and said, "I'm finished."
Modelling himself on his sister, Oliver stopped eating.
He put down the cutlery and declared in a babyish voice, "Mommy, I'm finished, too."
Natalia looked at the two kids with resignation.
She wiped their mouths clean and said, "Go and play then."
With a cheer, the kids immediately ran to the playroom.
Watching them, Natalia gave a silent smile and shook her head.
Sitting alone at the dinner table, she stared at the sumptuous meal without appetite.
She looked back and saw Archie still on the phone, with his back to her.
Her brows knitted.
Although Felix didn't make it clear on the phone what he was calling for, Natalia sensed instinctively
that it was something of great significance.
Otherwise, proud Felix would never come to Archie.
So thinking, Natalia cast her eyes down, feeling a trace of alarm.
Before long, Archie finished the call.
Seeing him back, Natalia asked immediately, "What happened? What did Felix call you for?"
Archie cast a calm look at her, handed back her phone, and said, "Let's finish the meal, and then I'll tell
you."
Natalia was choked by his words.
She grew more curious, but said no more and continued eating.
After dinner, Natalia asked two nannies to look after the kids in the playroom and put them to bed on
time.
Then she and Archie went upstairs to the bedroom.
On entering the bedroom, Archie said, "Felix wants to team up with me, saying he has found out who it
was that tampered with your plane and went after you before."
Natalia was astonished.
She widened her eyes in disbelief.
After she and Nancy had come back safely from the plane crash, they had dispatched many people
there to look into the case and find out about the backstage manipulators.
Group after group of people they had sent, but there had been no news whatsoever.
Finally, they had obtained a little information on the whereabouts of the killers that had gone after
Natalia.
When they reached the spot, however, the killers had long been dead, their bodies almost reduced to
bones.
It was obvious that they had been killed instantly when the scheme had failed.
The backstage manipulators were so cruel and forceful that they would leave no clues about them
behind.
The McCarthy family could only wield their power in Ambario, while the place where Natalia's accident
occurred was abroad and beyond their dominion. With other things occupying their attention, the
investigation, though still going on, had gradually ceased to be their priority. The only precaution they
were taking now was to reinforce the security when they went out every day.
Now Felix was telling them he had traced the identity of the killers.
It was a big shock to Natalia.
Hesitating for a moment, she asked, "What does he mean by teaming up with you? Team up against
what? And who are those killers?"
Archie said in a deep voice, "He said nothing about it. He only told me to go to his place tomorrow and
talk about it face to face."
Natalia vetoed that idea promptly.
"No, I won't let you go there."
Archie fixed a deep look on her.
Natalia said with apprehension, "You don't know Felix. There must be some real trouble that he can't
handle, or he will never ask for your help. Now that the McCarthy family and the Bissel family are in
such a delicate and tense relation, Felix may be setting a trap for you by getting you there, a trap that
you walk straight into."
"But it's a wonderful chance," said Archie calmly.
He paused and continued, "We can't live in such alarm forever. Natalia, you were lucky to survive their
scheme last time, but will you be so lucky next time? None of us can say that for sure. So if we really
have a chance to find them out, I'll do anything for it."
Natalia was stunned by Archie's words.
Staring at his deep eyes and his calm and determined countenance, she hesitated.
"But…"
"It's settled."
Archie said decisively, "Don't fret. He won't dare to set me up. After all, the Bissel family's domestic
business is in my control. Although he's an illegitimate child with a grudge against his family, he surely
hopes to get his share of the family's property."
"So he won't do me any harm. He has asked me to go there probably because he and I are faced with
the same enemies now."
"If so, he and I become friends. Even if the friendship is temporary, we can both get what we want. So
why not give it a go?"
Natalia sank into silence.
Archie's words set her to think again about the situation.
Actually, she did not insist that Felix would set Archie up. It was just that Felix struck her as too
sophisticated and crafty a man to cooperate with.
How could Felix do such a favor to the McCarthys for nothing?
There must be something wrong.
Thinking of that, Natalia said with a frown, "All right. You may go, but I'm going with you."
Archie knitted his brows.
Natalia said, "Don't argue about that, or neither of us will go."
Archie tried to stop her. "Natalia, you…"
"I won't listen to it."
Natalia interrupted him. Looking into his eyes, she said, "Don't tell me to stay home for the sake of the
kids. Archie, you're my husband, and I share your weal and woe. What matters most is your life and
safety. Should anything bad happen, I'd rather die with you than live on my own."
Archie was profoundly affected by Natalia's words.
His heart melted and brimmed with tenderness.
He was overwhelmed with love for Natalia.
He reached out and swept Natalia into his arms.
