Chapter 590

I gave her a weak smile, put all aggression aside and looked at her. "If I didn't have anyone powerful

backing me, I believe I would be the one begging for mercy now, am I right?"

She had come for me with two brawny men at her disposal. I was sure she had intended to make life

hell for me. If I were lucky, I might have been able to escape with my life.

But if luck wasn't on my side, my corpse would probably have been dumped somewhere in the

It could not be denied that some of our network and relationships with people were of high importance.

They could be the key to saving one's life, or to taking revenge on others.

She looked at me, anger seething through her teeth. "What are you planning to do?"

I smiled faintly and replied, "Nothing!" I stared at her with pursed lips and continued, "I've done all that

should've been done. What will happen next depends on your father. If he's innocent, nothing will

happen to him. But if he isn't, he won't be the only one suffering the consequences. You mentioned

earlier that Mr. Reid had used his power and influence to exact a personal vendetta. I believe this is

considered defamation in the eyes of the law. I've recorded every word you said just now. Let's hope

that things won't be too awkward between us when we meet in court."

"You..." Her chest heaved in anger. "Arianna, you're despicable."

I was not in the mood to talk with her about such things at this moment. So, I just replied with a forced

smile, "Miss Parker, you'd better head home. You being here did nothing to help your father, and you've

even caused him to get imprisoned."

Even the stupidest person knew how to seek advantages and to avoid harm. In the past, she wasn't

aware of those around me, so she had little care for what I did or say to her.

But now that she knew about it, she naturally would have to reflect on the past and rethink the choices

that she made. After watching her ponder to herself for a while, she walked out of my place, leaving me

standing in the yard and staring blankly into the space in front of me.

The past four years I've had were indeed stolen years. Now that everyone was here, I was afraid that it

was time to bid goodbye to a quiet and peaceful life.

Charles' assistant came by to pick him up after dinner while Norman had gone home with Bennett.

Without Bennett around to play with her, Anne had gone to bed on her own.

As I got older, I found it harder to fall asleep. In the midsummer night, twinkling stars flooded the sky

like little diamonds in space. Nature was always so beautiful.

These days, the weather had been hot and dry, and the noise of the outside world tended to get to my

head more often than not. Fortunately, things quieted down at night and being in this silence,

amusingly, made me feel less lonely.

I heard a knock at the door in the dead of the night. I immediately rose from bed and when I opened the

door, I saw Hendrix standing on the other side.

Under the dim streetlights, the man's eyes looked deep and dark as he stood by the soor.

Before I could speak, he had already held me in his arms. He did not speak but I could smell the faint

scent of alcohol on him.

I helped him into the house and asked, "Did you drink?"

He did not reply me, and just kept on hugging me quietly and solemnly. He seemed to have fallen

asleep.

It was late, and the night wasn't getting any warmer. I quickly helped usher him to the bedroom.

Before I could help him to the bed, I found myself being pressed against the small door frame. He held

my chin up, looked at me, and then started kissing me.

I raised my hand and tried to push him away, but he was so much stronger than I was. I snapped at

him, "Hendrix, let go of me!"

He stopped. His eyes were deep like the abyss, and a tinge of bitterness made its way to his

handsome face; a look that I had not seen in a very long time. "Four years. I thought that I could slowly

get over you in four years. But the longer the time droned on, the deeper you became engraved in my

heart. At night, I couldn't do anything but numb myself with alcohol."

These incomprehensible words were laced with immense pain and longing.

I sighed and whispered softly, "Are you really drunk?"

He stayed silent and just held me in his arms, like his life depended on it.

I knew in my heart that if he was really drunk, he wouldn't have been able to get to my place at all.

I helped him up once more and placed him on the bed. Then, I walked out of the bedroom.

I have made an hangover drink for him and left it at the bed side. The handsome and gentle man was

still lying on the bed.

He slowly opened his eyes and before long, his black eyes were staring into my soul. He asked politely,

"Are you angry?"
