Chapter 1401

Hendrix was silent for a moment before he spoke in a very serious tone, "Arianna, I know you'reworried and care very much about Anne, but you must promise me that no matter what happens,we can't hurt anyone, okay?"

I nodded and replied, "Okay, I won't. You have to believe me!"

His affectionate voice came from the other end of the line, "Okay, I believe you!"

I understood the meaning of Hendrix's words. He was afraid I was willing to do anything just to saveAnne, that I inadvertently hurt someone else in the process. My mind was very torn. On one hand, Iwas worried about Anne and wanted to save her no matter what. On the other hand, I was doubtingmy choice of bringing Abby into this. Both of them were just young children who had so much hopeand promise. Once Abby underwent the operation, no matter how well we took care of her, it wouldeventually still cause damage to her body.

I chatted with Hendrix for a while before hanging up the phone. When I saw Abby gazing at me witha pair of watery eyes, I thought she was hungry and said to her, "We're getting home soon. Abby, are you hungry?"

She shook her head and looked at me, still clutching the bread and bottle of water we had givenher. Then, she said, "Madam Reid, why haven't we seen Susan's car after driving for a long time? Isaw many vehicles on the road, but none of them was the one that took Susan away. Where did shego? Can I still see her?"

I was stunned by this five-year-old child. I thought that she had been staring out the window, lookingat the scenery outside. I didn't expect that she had been looking for Susan's van all along the way.

In that instant, there was indescribable distress in my heart. I suppressed my emotions and said,"Abby, Susan is with someone else now. I don't know where she is either."novelbin

After hearing what I said, she lowered her head and fell silent. She just looked at the bread in herhand, appearing a little depressed. I wanted to comfort her, but I didn't know what to say.

I could only keep silent. After a while, Sheridan said to me, while driving, "Miss Reid, you can take anap. We're still a few hours' drive away. I'll wake you when we arrive!"

I couldn't fall asleep because there was something bothering me. I asked him, "Mr. Lawson, are allthe villagers like this? How can they treat each of their children so differently?"

I saw how much distress and love that woman had in her eyes when she carried her son on herback. However, why were her daughters so worthless to her?

Sheridan sighed lightly and said, "In this world, there are too many things we don't know. Thesuffering that each person needs to face is different."

Yes, every person is destined to live a different life from the moment of birth. Some people wereborn into rich families where they can live a worry-free life. Some of them were born in mountainvillages. It was already a blessing for them to be alive.

It was already night time when we arrived at the villa, and Hendrix was waiting for me in the livingroom. The houses in the south did not have underfloor heating. He had started a fire in the fireplaceto warm up the living room. He was reading a book while waiting for my return.

After dropping us off, Sheridan also headed home. Holding Abby's hand, I led her into the villa.Hendrix got up and looked at Abby. Perhaps, it was due to his commanding presence, Abbyretreated toward my back in fear when she saw Hendrix.

I smiled faintly and reassured her that she didn't have to be scared.

Hendrix looked at me and asked, "Have you had dinner?"

I shook my head and said, "It was a seven or eight hours' drive back here. I came back homedirectly because we couldn't find anything to eat on the way back. Have you eaten yet?"

He stared at me and answered simply, "I was waiting for you!" After saying that, his eyes fell onAbby.
