The astute Felix gradually noticed that something was off with Esther. He poked his little head out fromher embrace and gently said, “Daddy, call the doctor.”

Helpless, Bradley let go, and Esther held Felix even tighter as if afraid that the boy would vanish if shelet go.

Bradley rubbed his temples, feeling a headache, and pressed the call button.

The doctor noticed the IV needle in Felix’s hand and kindly suggested, “Ma’am, let me examine youfirst, okay?”

Esther glanced at the doctor and then at Felix. Out of the corner of her eyes, she noticed that the bloodhad started flowing back into the IV needle on Felix’s hand and spoke softly. “Please check on my sonfirst.‘

The doctor could only comply with Esther’s request and began examining Felix’s small hand.

“The blood is flowing back a bit, but the needle hasn’t come out of place. It’s not a big deal,” the doctorreassured them but added a cautionary note, “Mr. Felix, please try to remain still. If the needle getsdislodged, we’ll have to administer another injection.”

“Doctor, please check on my mommy first.”

Felix sat obediently on the bed, not moving, as he watched Esther intently.

“Mommy, let the doctor examine you.”
