Chapter 624

Chapter 624

In a fleeting moment, a self-destructive thought arose in Esther’s mind. She wondered, why not justend it all? Death would put an end to everything.

No. It was her birth, her life, that had been the mistake. When would this mistake ever end?

Esther’s hand found the fruit knife hidden under her pillow. A single, forceful thrust into her heart couldend it all.

“Mommy!”

Felix’s sudden cry startled Esther, making her drop the fruit knife instantly. She quickly wiped away hertears, peeking out from the to

to greet her son.

“Sweetie, Mommy’s right here.”

Hearing her voice, Felix rushed into her arms and wrapped her tightly. “Mommy, your one and only sonis here!”

A smile broke through Esther’s tears as she gently ran her fingers through Felix’s hair. “Who broughtyou here, my sweetie?” she asked.

“Uncle Jasper did!” Excited, Felix unzipped his backpack and took out a box of cookies, eagerlyhanding them to his mom.

“Mommy, our teacher gave these out at school. Trust me, they’re super delicious.” He opened the box, grabbed a star-shaped cookie, and offered it to Esther. “Mommy, try this!”

Savoring the crisp, flaky cookie, Esther chuckled. “You’re right. It’s very delicious.”

“Mommy, Uncle Jasper told me you gave your liver to another lady. You’re like a superhero!” Felixclimbed beside Esther, gently wiping the tears from her face with his tiny hands. Concern filled hisvoice as he asked, “Mommy, why are you crying?”

Esther pressed her forehead against Felix’s and murmured, “Just seeing you fills me with joy, sweetie.”

“Mommy, the school that Aunt Sadie picked for me is amazing! I’m really happy there!” Felix talkedexcitedly about his school life, oblivious to everything else.

Esther’s gaze rested on her son, and she felt overwhelmed with self-reproach. How could she haveconsidered such a reckless act? She still had Felix, as well as her missing daughter. As their mother, her unwavering responsibility was to protect them at all costs. If she failed in that, could she even callherself a mother?

“So, my sweetie, have you made any friends at school?”

Felix’s head bobbed up and down with enthusiasm. “Mommy, I’ve made a good friend! He even invitedme to his house, but I didn’t go.”

“And why not?” Esther’s heart was now filled with love for Felix. She realized that perhaps she andBradley were never meant to be together. In that case, it might be best to part ways and let each livetheir own life.

“Because I want you to meet my new friend, Mommy!” Felix nestled closer, his voice soft andreassuring. “Mommy, you need to get well soon. Then we can go to the airport to pick upnovelbin
