Chapter 149 I Was Wrong

After tidying up her office, Lysander hailed a cab and headed to the cemetery.

At the entrance, she purchased a bouquet of white chrysanthemums and placed it in front of Elisa’s

mbstone.

The tombstone bore a photo of Elisa, a picture of her in her kindly old age. It seemed to hark back tothe time when Lysander had just married Josiah. Elisa had a teasing smile on her face, expressing herwish for them to give her a great–grandchild soon.

“Grandma Elisa, I’ve come to see you.” Lysander gave Elisa’s tombstone a deep bow.

“It seems your dream of having a great–grandchild is no longer possible,” she said with a bitter smile.“However, I will visit you often in the future. If there’s anything you need on the other side, you can letme know through my dreams. Apart from having a great–grandchild, if there’s anything else within mypower, I will find a way to do it for you.”

On the way home, her phone was insistently ringing.

Lysander casually ended the call.

When it rang again, she immediately turned off the phone.

As soon as she arrived home, she saw Daphne anxiously standing at the door. “Daphne?”

Daphne immediately rushed over. “What’s going on with you? Where have you been? You had meworried sick.”

Lysander looked perplexed. “What’s going on?”

“I thought you were losing hope and…” Daphne shook her head. “I’m glad you’re okay.”

Still somewhat bewildered, Lysander entered the house and opened the door. It wasn’t until she wentto the study to boil some water that she finally understood what was going on.

“Josiah had been frantically searching for you everywhere, unable to reach you. He just left,” informedDaphne.

Lysander showed no particular reaction. “What brings him to me?”

Daphne smacked her lips. “He didn’t say.”

Lysander remained silent.

“Lysander, that mistress… She’s really carrying a dark–skinned child in her womb, isn’t she?”

Lysander glanced at her. “Did you see the video?”

Daphne vented, “I couldn’t have avoided it even if I wanted to. She is really something, always makinga grand spectacle of herself. Wasn’t she just recently seen attending numerous banquets with Josiah, proclaiming herself as Mrs. Guerra everywhere she went? Oh right, you know about the Fuller familyfrom East Harborbrook, don’t you? Their grandson just had his first month celebration, and she wentthere with Josiah as well. I heard it ended up quite unpleasantly, with a big quarrel erupting during thecelebration. Old

Mr. Fuller was furious, considering he had invited almost all the celebrities from Harborbrook to theparty. By now, probably the whole of Harborbrook knows that Josiah ended up with a shrew. Now, it’snot just that they know he’s with a shrew, but they also know he’s being cuckolded.”

Lysander recalled the welcoming party and the quarrel.

It was that time when Josiah got drunk.

Daphne went on, “After years of anticipation, Old Mr. Fuller finally welcomed a grandson whom hecherished. immensely. However, the celebration of the baby’s first month was spoiled by thathomewrecker. Rumor has it that he was furious afterward. Even Josiah personally came to apologize.”

“He did?”

“Yes, but what’s done is done. Out of respect for the longstanding friendship between the two families,Old Mr. Fuller didn’t voice his frustrations openly. However, everyone in our circle knew that he hadalready warned his son and daughter–in–law to limit their interactions with the Guerra family. He saidthat Lysanne was a troublemaker who would eventually lead to Josiah’s downfall.”

The kettle was whistling, indicating the water had come to a boil.

Lysander brewed a cup of coffee for each of them, handing one to Daphne. “We’ve spoken quite a bit.Have some coffee to soothe your throat.”

Daphne took it, but it was unbearably hot. She immediately placed it on the table. “I’ll leave it here for awhile. It’s too hot.“”

Lysander nodded.

Daphne’s phone rang again.

She glanced over, then directly asked Lysander, “It’s Josiah. What should I say?”

After some thought, Lysander suggested, “Let’s go out for dinner. It’s my treat. What would you like toeat?”

Daphne pursed her lips. “All right, I get what you mean.”

She picked up the phone, and from Josiah’s end, there was the sound of the wind howling. His voicecarried a

“Ah, um, Mr. Guerra, Lysander is fine…”

“Has she gone home?”

“She did come back, but… well, you know what she means. She doesn’t really want to see you again inthe future. If you have anything to say, just say it here. I’ll turn on the speaker. She’ll be able to hear.”

Daphne pressed the speakerphone button.

On the other end of the phone, there was the howling of strong winds, accompanied by his deep, steady breathing.

One could still faintly hear the cries of the seagulls.

It would seem Josiah had gone to the seaside.
