Chapter 1818

Maja stood up, her tone cool as a cucumber, “Mr. Brown, we need more than her letter ofunderstanding. We need yours too.”novelbin

“There’s no way I’m giving you that.”

Felix locked eyes with hers, his gaze unfathomable, “It’s never gonna happen.”

If he did, what would keep Carol around? She’d ditch him without hesitation, take Abner, and hit theroad.

His hand, hanging at his side, slowly clenched into a fist. Calling it even? On what grounds?

Maja’s eyes narrowed, a hint of mockery in her voice, “Mr. Brown, you’re so smitten with Listina.Aren’t you afraid we’ll take her out if you don’t cough up the document?”

“Ms. Pennyfeather, if you go down that road, Carol can kiss that document goodbye, and she’ll loseeverything the Miller family have. At least the Miller name hasn’t been swapped for Brown. Even ifPresident Miller kicks the bucket, he’ll have something to show for himself in the afterlife. Don’t youagree?”

His words were methodical, his tone even. The man had a core of steel. Maja glanced at Listina, who had her head held high again, looking smug as a cat with cream.

Raising an eyebrow, she called out, “Cornelia.”

Cornelia, ever so astute, stepped forward and slapped Listina a couple of more times.

Listina was stunned, disbelief clear on her face. Even with Felix here, they dared to lay hands onher.

“Felix, Felix.”

Felix didn’t spare her a glance but continued, “Listina, give them the document.”

Listina bit her lips hard. At that moment, she finally understood she was nothing to these people. They could snuff her out as easily as stepping on an ant.

If she didn’t comply, she might really end up dead, beyond Felix’s help. Her lips trembling, she clungto his sleeve desperately, “I’ll do it; I’ll do it. Please, just get me out of here.”

Felix helped her to her feet, turning to Maja.

“Ms. Pennyfeather, I’ll be taking her back now.”

Getting Listina to offer the document was his concession. If it came down to a life-and-deathstruggle, he’d strip off the hollow shell that was the Miller Group without a second thought, andAbner behind bars surely wouldn’t want to witness that.

Maja had to consider Abner’s position, as well as Carol’s. She raised her hand to massage hertemple, when she noticed hands already there, easing her tension.

Ian’s voice was soft, “Carol needs that document in his possession. Getting rough with Listina ispointless. Felix is off his rocker; I bet he’d never let it go, not until the bitter end.”

“Has he fallen for Carol or something?”

Otherwise, it made no sense why he’d refuse to release the document, even planning on marryingCarol. It all seemed a bit batty.

“Who knows what goes on in that man’s head? It’s buried deep.”

After finishing his thought, Ian moved behind her, beginning to massage her shoulders.

“Alright, forget about them for now. You’ve slapped and kicked her enough today. Listina looksgenuinely scared. You should focus on taking care of yourself. Let’s get you checked out thisafternoon.”

Maja nodded, stifling a yawn, the fatigue setting in. Seeing this, Cornelia quickly excused herselfwith good sense.

In the departing car, Listina was sobbing in the passenger seat, “They’re too much, just too much!Felix, my face is all swollen. It really hurts.”

Felix watched the road ahead in silence, only speaking as the car halted at her villa’s front gate. Hegripped the steering wheel tight, “You’re staying put at home, not stepping foot outside. You can’thandle those people.”

That was precisely why Listina felt so indignant. Why should she be the one to suffer?

“Also, about last night, I don’t want a repeat. So, for the next couple of months, you’re better offstaying inside.”

“Felix, don’t you care about me anymore? Your wedding is just about a week away. You’re tellingme to stay cooped up while I just let you marry her? I’d rather die! I’ll go bash my head in or slit mywrists! I don’t want to live anymore!”
