Chapter 1816

“You don’t seem to be scared, Ms. Miller; looks like you’re aware of what you’ll face tonight, right?”

Her brow lifted, Carol exuded an air of nonchalance, and she even leaned back slightly

"Who sent you?"

"Who else but Mr. Brown? He said he's bored of you. Thinks it's our turn for a bit of fun."

"Is that so?" Carol's eyelashes fluttered down as if she were contemplating something.

Unable to restrain himself, the thug lunged at her.

With a swift roll, Carol dodged, but her head clipped the edge of a table, leaving her dazed.

The man grabbed her hair with a snarl, "You think you can fricking run from us?"

Just as he finished his threat, the door to the coffee shop was kicked off its hinges, and a fewbodyguards rushed in.

Carol, hand pressed to her bleeding forehead, watched as the bodyguards swiftly subdued herattackers. While Carol grabbed a glass aside, shattered it on the floor and ferociously dragged ashard across her wrist.

Blood poured from the wound, panic etching into the bodyguards' faces.

"Ms. Miller?"

Carol stumbled toward the exit, her voice cool and detached, "Take these guys away and teachthem some manners. I don't want Felix to suspect a thing."

"Understood."

Before Carol came there, she had messaged Ian.

She was no fool; knew better than to expect Felix to bring up the letter of understanding; whenevershe broached the subject, he bristled with anger. How could he hand it over so easily?

So, she suspected the message was a trap, likely set by Listina, who was with Felix tonight after all.

Carol asked Ian to send some men to protect her; she hadn't wanted to trouble Maja with this, givenher pregnancy and the fact that she was supposed to be resting.

Ian had proven reliable, responding even in the dead of night, which gave her the courage to facethe ordeal.

Now, due to excessive blood loss, Carol collapsed and was rushed to the hospital.

The next morning, Felix bombarded her phone with calls, which went unanswered as she layunconscious.

He asked someone to check her whereabouts; only then did he know she was in the hospital. Heimmediately left an important meeting and hurried to the hospital.

Carol was bandaged and receiving IV fluids. The doctor cited significant blood loss. Felix'sexpression darkened; he instructed the man near him, "Find out what happened."

He left with the order right away; twenty minutes later, the man returned.

"Mr. Brown, Ms. Miller received a message from you about the letter of understanding and left tomeet you. Instead, she was ambushed by a group of men. No one knows exactly what transpired, but passersby intervened and saved her."

His message? But Felix had sent no such message to Carol.

He pulled out his phone; his thoughts immediately turned to Listina, though he refused to dwell onthem. He just quietly gazed at the phone screen; his phone's records had been wiped clean.

He reached out, intending to grab Carol’s hand, but his hand withdrew slowly midway. Carol openedher eyes just then, calmly gazing at the ceiling.

Felix struggled to find the words to speak. He stayed by her side, tending to her needs withhomemade soup and gentle care, and even took his work at the ward, yet he avoided discussinghow to solve the matter.

Carol remained quiet until Felix's phone rang, Listina's shrill cries piercing the silence, "Felix, help!Help! Maja's going to kill me; she’s gonna kill me!"novelbin

Listina had only finished these words and the call cut off abruptly.

Maja, unable to physically confront Listina due to her pregnancy, had enlisted the help of Cornelia.

"Give her a few more kicks. Looking at her face just pisses me off."

Cornelia, ever loyal to Maja, didn't hesitate. After all, Maja was both her boss and benefactor. Moreover, she, too, loathed someone despicable like Listina.

She directly delivered two more kicks to Listina, followed by three sharp slaps to her face.
