Chapter 1775

Maja took another half sip, finally quenching the dryness in her throat.

She raised a hand to massage her temples, “If all Bernard wants is Fitch, then why the hell is hemessing with Ian?”

Dylan grabbed one of the reports, his lips pressed into a thin line.

“Looks like there could be two angles. First, using Ian to bait Fitch into the game. This report showsthat both Fitch and Ian hung around Bernard’s place as kids, and back then Bernard’s wife was stillalive. The place where Fitch and Ian have been hanging out is exactly that old haunt, whichprobably dropped Fitch’s guard, so he walked right into the trap. As for the second thing, let’s notforget about the fake Ian. The guy they’re carting off now, who can say if he’s the real deal or theimpostor? It throws a real wrench in the works, especially since Rachel’s the one in charge of thetransport. If she gets wind of anyone trying to intercept that prisoner transport, she’ll fight tooth andnail. Who comes out on top in that mess is anybody’s guess.”

Dylan set the report down.

“I’ve looked into Rachel’s record. She’s racked up a decent number of merits on a variety of cases, climbed the ranks fast. Since Bernard plucked her from the orphanage, she’s been groomed withtop-notch training. Her skills are on par with any of the guys in the task force. She’s gonna be toughto deal with and she sure as hell won’t let anyone get near that transport vehicle Ian would be in.”

“Dylan, should we check with Number 8 if it’s possible to storm in now and check up on Ian?”

Dylan’s face darkened, and after a long pause, he spoke in a hoarse voice, “Bernard choosing thislocation, you know what kind of people are inside? They’re the nation’s protected talents, families ofVIPs. Without clearance from over half of the higher-ups, no one can just barge in there. Number

8's only got a two-person team. If they make a move, the local military force could take them out ina heartbeat. No matter how tough they are, they can’t outgun a hail of bullets.”

Maja fell silent at once.

Bernard had been planning for years, orchestrating everything to perfection. Now he could stepdown from his post with peace of mind, just waiting for the experiment to commence.

“But, Dylan, if Bernard’s looking to resurrect two people, one being Fitch, who’s the other?”

“No idea. Probably no one but Bernard himself knows.”

The man was too damn composed, everything already neatly tied up. Nobody had a clue who hissecond pick was.

Could it be Queena? But Queena’s ashes had been found, and since Rachel was known for herintegrity, those ashes were definitely Queena’s.

It was all too weird; this particular detail was just bizarre.

Beck, sitting nearby, quickly offered some comfort, “Maja, although Number 8 can’t make any bigmoves over there, they can still pull off something subtle. They might not be able to extract Ian, butthey can keep an eye on who enters the house. Right now, there’s just Sarah and another staffmember in there. Sarah occasionally steps out, and that’s our opportunity. If she really does haveMom’s memories inside her, think about it, is there anything that might trigger a more profoundrecollection?”novelbin

No one was sure why Sarah was helping Bernard with the experiment. If she was under some kindof drug-induced control, the effects could wane over time.

While Number 8 might not be able to enter the building, they had the chance to interact with Sarahoutside.

Plus, Number 8 had a decent rapport with her. Even if she was under Bernard’s thumb, she mightstill have a sliver of her own consciousness left, right?
