Chapter 1707

Nathan flicked the corner of his lips before tossing his cigarette to the ground and crushing it underfoot.

"Got any more?" he asked, but then added a cautionary note, "Take it easy, though. That stuff has side effects, and it's notexactly legal. It's a hassle to get."

"Yeah, | know."

The ringtone of his cell had silenced before Felix finally picked it up and redialed.

The moment Carol answered, his voice softened.

“Hey Carol, what's up?"

"| think I've got a fever."

"I'm on my way. Don't move around too much, just stay put."

"Okay."

Carol had been on the verge of disappointment, but she hadn't expected him to call back.He must've been at work and didn't hear his phone.

She coughed a few times, curled up on the couch, feeling her whole body burning up with fever.Nathan watched the scene, biting his cheek.

"Ms. Miller really can't resist you, can she? You've got a knack for playing with people's hearts, almost like you're taming hersubconsciously. But she seems clueless to it all. | reckon she's truly into you, not just playing around. Don't be too harsh, Felix."

He said this and saw Felix's expression darken.novelbin

Nathan instantly realized he might have crossed a line. Too far? What about Abner? Who was paying for the lives lost? Carolwas the daughter of an enemy, after all.

He offered a sheepish grin, "Just speaking my mind. My break's over, gotta head back. The boss has been on my case lately, damn it. Just because my diploma isn't fancy. If only I'd made it to university back then, I'm the only one with just an associate'sdegree in my department, and the boss watches me like a hawk."

Grumbling, Nathan walked out of the alley.

Felix finished his last half-cigarette slowly, then ambled toward Carol's apartment.

After hopping off the bus, he picked up some fruit and dropped by a pharmacy for some fever reducers. He walked straight into her apartment, finding her still curled up, her body slick with sweat, feverish and delirious.Felix calmly fed her a pill.

Carol opened her bleary eyes to look at him, a sheen of tears in her gaze.

"Felix."

"Yeah, you've got a fever. Rest up. I'll cut you some fruit.”

He went into the kitchen, sliced up an apple, and brought it over on a fork for her.

Carol was sluggish, her throat sore, hardly able to swallow.

But not wanting to disappoint him, she forced down a couple of slices before nestling into his embrace."You're so good to me, Felix."

Felix stiffened, his arm hanging by his side, not embracing her.

Looking down, he could see her sweat-dampened smile, even the strands of hair on her forehead soaked and clinging to herskin, making her look vulnerable.

All this fever because of him, and now a simple act of cutting fruit had her so grateful.

His lips curled into a smirk, and he softly patted her head.

Alone at home, Carol felt a wave of panic, but knowing he was there, she felt an instant calm.

Yet she was still worried about him missing work.

"Did you take time off again? Won't they dock your pay?"

She wanted to find an excuse to give him money, but Felix was no fool; he would surely sense something was off."It’s fine. You're more important than any paycheck."

Carol felt a surge of warmth, resting her head on his lap, her voice hoarse.

"I'm so tired. | need to rest."

"Sleep then."

Carol did fall asleep, her dreams restless and uneasy.

By evening, her fever had broken.

The room was filled with the aroma of dinner, and, stomach rumbling, she woke to find him busy in the kitchen.Felix glanced her way through the half-open door.

"Go wash up. Dinner's ready."

Carol felt blissful, a happiness she couldn't find with anyone else.
