Chapter 1567

[If you fancy hitting the shops, I'm game to tag along.]

She texted another message, though she knew full well Carol would likely decline.

[No worries, I'm actually doing okay. Maja just rang me up too, but she's swamped as usual. Anyway,

I've got my own stuff to deal with here. Gotta go.]

[Alright, you go handle your business.]

Zoey set her phone down, glancing around the office.

She'd been pulling all-nighters for the past two days, and hadn’t gone back home, barely taking time to

crash in the break room, freshen up, and change into a clean set of clothes before diving back into the

grind.

Now that she had a moment to breathe, her eyes felt like sandpaper.

There was a knock on the door, and in came Elvis, clutching a stack of papers. Spotting Zoey still at

her desk, his face registered surprise.

"Have you not gone home in two days?"

"Yeah, I've been trying to clear the deck of this month's backlog."

Elvis furrowed his brow with concern, "Zoey, Ms. Pennyfeather didn't expect you to work yourself to the

bone like this. By the time she gets back, you'll be running on fumes."

Zoey didn't respond, standing up with a playful tone, "Fine, I'll head home to rest now. The paperwork

I've finished is on the left - take a gander when you get a chance."

He hadn't expected her to agree so readily and just nodded.

Grabbing her purse, Zoey headed out - not towards home but to the local bar. She needed to find Tyler.

It wasn't about whatever mess Fitch had gotten into; she wanted the lowdown on the Miller drama.

Tyler had hinted before that the Miller family were in hot water, having caught wind of it even before the

news broke.

She called Tyler as she approached the bar. She had his number saved, but Tyler obviously didn't have

hers, judging by his flippant response, "Who's this?"

"Tyler, it's me, Zoey."

He paused, glancing sideways at Fitch, who was accompanied by Wendy.

It was Wendy's first formal encounter with Fitch since returning stateside. She was the picture of

demure coyness, stealing glances at Fitch at every opportunity.

Tyler knew his cousin well. Wendy had been smitten with Fitch for ages. Considering Fitch's general

aversion to women, she'd confessed her feelings once before heading abroad, faced rejection, and

hadn't pressed further.

Hearing of a potential union by marriage with Fitch, she'd eagerly rushed back. Besides, Wendy's

possessiveness was strong. Before, knowing Fitch avoided female company gave her a sense of

security.

Even after being rebuffed, it didn't matter to her - no other woman stood a chance. While abroad, she'd

made sure to ward off any potential rivals, often posing as Fitch's girlfriend. Fitch didn't bother to

correct her; it conveniently shielded him from unwanted advances.

Tyler knew that if Fitch desired marriage, both the Stapleton family and the Haskins family would offer

no objections - both families were well-acquainted.

Now Zoey was here, still carrying a torch for Fitch? Wendy would never pull her punches.

Tyler chuckled, "What can I do for you?"

"I heard you'd be at the bar tonight. Mind if I swing by for a chat? There's something I need to discuss."

The subtext was clear as day. She must have hit a dead-end with Fitch - probably got blocked -and

now she was turning to him.

"Zoey, I'm a bit tied up at the moment. Maybe some other time?"

"Tyler, I can wait for you to finish your drink. Is it okay if I just hang in the lobby?"

She had to find out what was going on with Carol. If something had happened to Carol, Maja would

undoubtedly be worried.

As soon as Wendy heard Tyler call out for Zoey, she looked up, her eyes flashing with derision. That

woman still hadn't given up?

He had a drink before him, yet untouched. Wendy quickly played the attentive card, mixing a bit of

bourbon into his drink.

"Fitch, try this. I picked up some mixology abroad. They say this blend has a unique kick."

Fitch humored her with a sip, withholding any comment. Content belongs to Draмanоvеls.com

Wendy discreetly pulled out her phone and texted Mia.

[Zoey's actually turned up at the hotel, trying to get a meet with Tyler. You at the bar tonight, Mia?novelbin

Fancy stepping out for a peek?]

With a snort of contempt, Mia grabbed a drink from a passing waiter and made a beeline toward Zoey.

Before Zoey could react, she was soaked. Looking up to meet Mia's gaze, she wasn't the least bit

surprised.
