Chapter 1548

But no one expected that the city where Ian was staying would plunge into panic as daylight broke.

At 7 a.m., right at the peak of the morning rush, a patient infected with a contagious disease was

discovered in the bustling city center.

That meant the disease had made its way to the heart of the city.

The mall where the patient was found was immediately sealed off, trapping everyone inside for

observation, while outside, anxiety was spreading like wildfire.

Ian stood on his hotel balcony and watched the people below rushing about, frantically stockpiling

supplies from the supermarkets. Chaos was on the horizon.

So when Beck's call came through, Ian's brow furrowed, his heart skipping a beat.

"You had only one job—keep an eye on her! But you just screwed it!"

Beck, knowing he was at fault, didn't dare to argue.

Ian took a deep breath before hanging up. He tried to call Maja, only to find her phone switched off.

He instantly regretted sneaking into the city behind her back, knowing full well what she was like.

The city was descending into disorder, and Maja, pregnant and alone, could be facing any number of

dangers.

He couldn't bear to think about it, bombarding her with messages, desperate to find out when her flight

would land.

When Maja arrived at the airport, something felt off. The air was thick with dust, making it hard to see.

She wasn't alone; another traveler from Windhelm was with her, both of them stung by the whippingnovelbin

sand.

It wasn't until they got into a local guide's car that they felt some relief.

The guide barely knew Maja's language, limited to a few basic phrases.

"Sit, go rest," he said as he shut the car door.

Maja, dressed in flat shoes and carrying only a bag, looked every bit the college student. The other

person from Windhelm, a woman wearing thick glasses and a hat, sat beside her.

Feeling the fatigue of early pregnancy, Maja had anticipated a straightforward ride from the guide to her

hotel, assuming she and the bespectacled woman were headed to the same destination.

But when the car stopped and she opened her eyes, she found herself in the middle of nowhere.

The guide was chatting with a group of people, who promptly handed over a wad of cash.

With a grin, the guide pocketed the money and drove off.

A chill ran down Maja's spine as she turned to the woman beside her.

"It looks like we've been sold," the woman said with a hint of coldness.

And it was as blatant as daylight.

Maja never imagined that a guide could be so brazen.

The men who took the cash approached, speaking in a language she didn't understand, and reached

out towards them.

Instinctively, Maja kicked out, toppling two of them with a well-placed blow.

There were four men in total, and a motorcycle that seemed to be their ride.

The woman beside her hadn't expected Maja's swift reaction. While still in shock, Maja delivered two

more kicks to the vulnerable spots of the other two men.

Both men doubled over, white-faced and kneeling in pain.

Grabbing the motorcycle keys from the ground, Maja pulled the woman along.

"Let's go!"

The woman quickly hopped on the back of the bike.

Maja wasn't an experienced rider, but she knew the basics and could handle a bicycle, so they made a

steady escape.

Having dozed off in the car, Maja had no recollection of the route they'd taken, so she turned to her

companion for help.

"Do you remember how to get to the airport?"

"I do," the woman replied softly, her voice steady and devoid of fear.

Relieved, Maja drove the motorcycle while the woman directed.

Checking the map on her phone, the woman guided Maja in a new direction.

However, along the way, they encountered masses of people fleeing.

Maja continued toward the city, the woman on the back observing the grim surroundings with a heavy

sigh. Reаd at Dram?nоvеls.coм

"First time here?" Maja asked.

Hearing Maja's question, she asked, "What brings you here?"

"I'm looking for my brother. What about you?"

"I'm searching for my love."

It turned out they were both on a quest to find someone dear.
