Chapter 966

So, the one who’d sent her that message must have known Patric, and Patric could have possiblyspoken about their deal with that person.

Maja reopened the letter, the image of the tender man in the letter still clear in her mind.novelbin

She wondered if he was really dead.

The question plagued her, often giving her nightmares in the wee hours of the night.

Without unraveling that mystery, without knowing his true identity, the ring and the letter would foreverbe her torment, and forever be a pain in lan’s heart.

Sighing, Maja locked up the items once more and headed downstairs to find Phelps once again.

She had only left a couple of hours ago, and Phelps was surprised to see her back so soon.

“Mr. Phelps, can you assure me that lan will be alright? Are you sure he has a backup plan to get out ofthis situation safely?” She asked.

Phelps, who was donning white gloves, nodded slightly.

“Fitch seems to be cool as a cucumber, he must know something. We only need to worry when Fitchstarts to panic,” He reassured.

Maja let out a breath she didn’t realize she’d been holding, her voice weak, “I might have to leave for afew days.”

Phelps glanced at her, quickly grasping her concerns.

“Seems like you’ve made up your mind,” He commented,

“Yes.”

“Then I congratulate you,” Phelps took a business card from his pocket and handed it to her, sayingwith a smile, “If you choose lan, your medical bills here will be half–off.”

Maja, originally feeling weighed down, was left speechless at the sight of the business card.

As she left the hospital and got into her car, she headed straight for the address she’d been givenearlier.

The town it led to was in another city, and she had no chance of reaching it until the following day, thusmaking it impossible for her to return before lan’s poker game ended.

At that moment, she chose to believe Phelps‘ words that lan would be fine:

If something were to go wrong, she’d have to risk it all to find Steve and relay the news to him.

Taking such a risk meant possibly facing a bullet, but she had no other choice.

Before that, however, she needed to settle things with her past.

That was Maja’s plan, and having figured it all out, she felt relatively at ease during the journey.

Meanwhile, back at lan’s, there was a visitor. It was Jeff.

Jeff had come to visit him.

Even in his room, lan was still busy handling documents related to the Raymond Corporation.

“Mr. President,” Jeff greeted, bringing with him a brand–new suit which he hung in the room’swardrobe.

One look around the room and Jeff could easily tell that it had been disinfected, most likely to cater tolan’s obsession with cleanliness.

lan nodded, and then asked, “Did Maja call you?”

“She did call. Ms. Pennyfeather is now aware of your situation.

“What was her reaction?”

When lan asked, his fingers tightened around his pen and his breathing was slightly hitched.

Jeff thought about it, then honestly answered, “Ms. Penny only called me once to inquire about yoursituation, and she hasn’t called since.”

lan’s brows furrowed as he curiously asked, “Did she call anyone else?”

“She called Mr. Haskins and Tyler, but both calls were rejected. I heard today that Ms. Pennyfeatherhas left, and her whereabouts are currently unknown.”

The word “left” pierced lan’s heart.

Leaving at such a crucial time could mean that she didn’t want anything to do with him, or that she hadother matters to attend to.

But if she truly loved him, wouldn’t his predicament be her top concern for the moment?

lan’s face darkened, his throat tightening.

He wanted to say something, but in the end, he closed his eyes and kept silent.
