But the sudden overnight rain had stalled the search efforts.

Then, Edith and Selena got word from Carlene. Turns out, lan went missing because of Maja. He haddecided to go to the neighboring city for an auction.

Upon hearing this, the two women were beyond livid and went to confront Maja immediately.

“You bloody wretch! Come out!” Selena was banging on Maja’s bedroom door. “If we can’t save lan,you and your entire Pennyfeather family are going down with

him!”

Selena had already lost one son, and she couldn’t bear the thought of losing lan. She was screaming atthe top of her lungs, wishing she could break down the door.novelbin

Maja’s head was already aching and the insults only made her feel like her head was about to burst. She stuffed some earplugs in and curled up under her covers. Selena scolded for a while, thenreturned to the living room, panting, and asked her people, “Have you dug up everything on thePennyfeathers?”

The bodyguard nodded and handed over all the information they had on Maja’s parents and even heruncles and aunts.

When Selena saw Lillian’s picture, her eyes widened and she nearly fainted.

“Who is this? Who is this?”

The bodyguard was startled and quickly replied, “That’s Neil Pennyfeather’s ex–wife, Maja’s biologicalmother, Lillian.”

Selena’s eyes widened again, she felt as if she had been struck by lightning.

Lillian?

Lillian!

She was shaking all over and without hesitation, she dialed Steve Raymond’s number, Steve wasSelena’s husband and lan’s father.

“Steve! Get back here and explain this to me. Why didn’t you stop lan’s wedding to Maja? Did youknow all along that Maja was that bitch’s daughter? Come back and explain!”

Selena’s voice was hoarse with rage as she angrily swept everything off the coffee table. The fruit bowl, the teapot, everything shattered on the floor.

Edith was taken aback, but she knew who Selena was referring to. Years ago, her son had fallen for agirl from a small town and wanted to marry her, despite having been betrothed to Selena. Although itwas a childhood engagement, it was a match of equals.

The whole thing was a big mess. Ultimately, Edith had to intervene, threatening to take her own life. With additional pressure from Selena’s family, the two were finally married.

As for the other woman, she never seemed to have left that small town.

Steve went to that remote place because of a mission back then. Thirty years ago, Crystalbrook Valleywas much less developed than it is now. There were no roads to the city, and you had to crossmountains on foot. It was said that it would take a month to reach the outskirts of Greenfield.

Steve was away for half a year and, due to the inconvenience, he never came back. He was onlynineteen years old then and was engaged to be married. But when he returned, he didn’t want toacknowledge the engagement anymore. He wanted to marry a girl from Crystalbrook Valley.

The Raymonds were one of the respected families in Greenfield. They would never accept such awoman into their family. Edith firmly believed that Lillian had seduced her son because of the Raymondfamily’s wealth, which caused a lot of controversy at the time.

Despite Steve’s heart belonging to someone else, Selena was determined to marry him. She dideverything she could to secure the marriage and they were married

at a young age.

But what no one knew was that Steve had just confessed his feelings to Lillian. She said she wouldthink about it. But after that, Steve never went back to Crystalbrook Valley. He was trapped inGreenfield by his marriage.

Because of her deep hatred for the woman who had stolen Steve’s heart, Selena could never forgether face. Even in her dreams, she wanted to tear the woman’s face apart.

After their marriage, Steve was even more reluctant to go home. His relationship with Selena wasirrevocably broken.

Selena loved Steve deeply. But Steve felt only a sliver of responsibility towards Selena. The chasmbetween love and indifference was insurmountable.
