Chapter 1588

The afternoon sun was dipping lower in the sky when Cornelia decided she needed to reach out. She

was about to catch a bus out of town, but something gnawed at her conscience. With a resigned sigh,

she picked up her phone and dialed Maja, despite the time difference.

“Cornelia?”

“Ms. Pennyfeather,” she greeted with a note of urgency in her voice.

“What’s wrong? Is there a problem on set?”

“No, Ms. Pennyfeather. Zoey’s been in an accident. I suspect it’s the Bennitts’ doing. She’s likely in

trouble, and I know she wouldn’t call you herself.”

Maja’s eyes narrowed, a suspicion she’d harbored about Zoey seemed to be manifesting, but she was

tied up at a hotel waiting for Ian to emerge.

“How bad is it?”

“She nearly didn’t make it.”

Maja inhaled deeply, “And you’re off to a shoot now?”

“Yeah, I just wanted to let you know. She was lucky this time, might not be next time.”

“Get on your bus, Cornelia. Do your job. I’ll handle Zoey’s situation. I’ll check with some people.”

“Take care of yourself, Ms. Pennyfeather.”

After hanging up, Maja didn’t waste a second before calling Tyler. The moment he saw her name

flashing on his screen, his scalp tingled with apprehension. He knew Maja’s protective streak, and if

she kicked up a fuss, Ian would no doubt get involved—and if the Sanders family were to step in, the

mess would only escalate.

He chose not to answer, hoping to play dead. But when Maja’s calls went unanswered thrice, she

texted him.

[I don’t care what the Bennitts are planning for Zoey, but if she gets hurt again, I won’t let it go lightly.

You better keep your people in check. I don’t play nice like she does.]

Zoey would never say a word when being bullied. But Maja wouldn't let anyone who bullied her get

away with it.

Tyler read the message and rubbed his temples. He'd initially planned to sit back and watch whether

Fitch would intervene, but now he knew he couldn’t let Wendy continue her reckless ways. If Fitch

himself went after Zoey, though, that was out of Tyler’s hands.

Tyler smiled. He knew Fitch's temperament too well. Fitch was too rational. If there was no chance for

Fitch to see his heart clearly, he would marry Wendy very calmly.

By evening, Fitch’s lawyer had reached out to Zoey again, this time visiting her in the hospital. The

lawyer was clearly not expecting to find her hospitalized and in such a bad state.

“Zoey, please cooperate with the police investigation.”

Hearing the lawyer's cold tone, Zoey slowly shut her eyes. She was too weak to utter a word, let alonenovelbin

defend herself.

Even if she could argue that it was Belinda’s doing alone, who would believe her? And even if she

could evade legal consequences, in Fitch’s eyes, she was complicit.

She opened her mouth, swallowing the pain in her throat.

“Let them investigate,” she rasped.

The lawyer gave her a surprised look, sensing an emotional undertone in her voice.

“Alright, the police will follow up.”

After the lawyer left, Zoey gazed out at the darkening sky, the drizzle still falling. Thoughts of Fitch

brought a deeper pain than any physical wound. She spent two days recuperating in the hospital.
