Chapter 1566

She hated it - the very existence of child trafficking, the snatchers lurking on the streets ready to

pounce. Why had she been the one to endure such horror?

She had never truly moved on. Nightmares haunted her sleep, so she trained relentlessly, becoming

stronger with each passing day.

In her dreams, she thwarted the disaster over and over, grasping her brother's hand time after time.

Waking up only reminded her how surreal the world felt.

"Do you believe it, Maja? He's still alive, still waiting for me. Sometimes, I swear I can hear him calling

me 'sis'."

Maja reached for a tissue from the box nearby and handed it to her. The woman didn't take it. Instead,

she lay down and slowly closed her eyes, tears streaming like a faulty faucet.

Maja didn't know what to say and left quietly, giving her the solitude she needed.

Back in her bedroom, sleep eluded Maja, a deep sense of melancholy washing over her. It was then

that Carol called, inquiring when she'd return home.

"I'm not sure yet, Carol. You're really getting married?"

There was a brief silence before Carol laughed on the other end, "Yeah, if you don't come back soon,

I'll be hitched before you know it."

Maja felt a pang of guilt. Carol was her best friend, but ever since she'd been in Greenfield, life had

thrown so much at her that she'd hardly had time for a proper catch-up; now she would probably miss

Carol’s a wedding.

"I'll try to come back as soon as I can."

"Maja, I just wanted to let you know. I'm aware you're busy there. By the way, didn't you ask me to keep

an eye on Zoey? She and Fitch seem to be up to something. But according to Mia, it's all one-sided on

Zoey's part. Mia's made sure the whole social circle knows about it, and Fitch hasn't bothered to clear

the air. He's even getting engaged to Wendy of the Stapleton family. Wendy just came back from

abroad, and their families are set to meet."

Maja stood frozen, feeling out of touch with the goings-on back home. Since when did Fitch, notorious

for his aversion to women, suddenly decide to get married?

"Is Zoey doing okay?"

"Well, not so much. She's been working hard, landing some big contracts for your company. She's

earned a lot of praise in the industry at least."

Maja grasped the situation; Zoey still couldn't let go of Fitch. And who could blame her? Fitch was a

standout, even among the Greenfield elite. His past tenderness towards Zoey had obviously left its

mark. If he kept being cold to her in the first place, she couldn’t fall for him.

Maja was about to ask more when a loud thud came from outside her room.

"Carol, I'll have to call you back later; something's come up here."

"Sure, Maja. Take care."

After hanging up, Carol rubbed her temples wearily.

The TV buzzed with news of the Miller Group CEO's imprisonment and his sole heiress's impending

nuptials with the alleged mastermind behind it all. The story had been everywhere all day, from news

channels to Twitter trends.

Carol grabbed the remote and turned the TV off. At that moment, her phone buzzed with a message,

right on cue from Zoey.

Since their last encounter at the evening party, they'd kept in occasional contact. Clearly, Zoey had

seen the news and reached out to offer comfort.

[You holding up okay?]

[Haha, couldn't be better, just enjoying some R&R at home.]

Rumors linked it to a car accident from years ago that had claimed three lives, caused by the Miller

Group CEO.

The exact details, however, were kept from the media. Speculation suggested Felix had something to

do with it.

After all, the CEO had always been rational and doting on his daughter. Why would he pass the

company to an outsider rather than his own flesh and blood, especially when the man wasn't evennovelbin

married to Carol yet? Reąd at Drąmаոоvеls.com

As long as the wedding was set, he was always considered as an outsider.

The media was abuzz, but the truth was known by very few.
