He returned all the files to their original places, carefully arranged just as if they had never beentouched.
How long had she known Eric, he wondered. And why had she come to him? Why had she lied aboutthe other man being named Patric?
lan had many questions, but he wasn’t sure he would like the answers.
It all came down to one unpleasant truth: he was just a stand–in, a replacement for his brother.
A chill settled in his eyes. When people had compared him unfavorably to Eric in the past, he hadnever bothered to argue. He simply chose to join the army instead.
He never wanted to compete with Eric. In fact, he thought his brother was pretty cool.
But human nature was selfish. Always being overlooked led to resentment.
However, he had learned to let go of that resentment and had even taken over the Raymond familyafter his brother’s death. All because he had loved his grandfather.
lan put all the documents away. Remembering how Maja had agreed to marry into the Raymond family,he realized it wasn’t just to help the Pennyfeather family. She had wanted to marry into the Raymondfamily, but she had wanted to marry Eric.
But Eric was dead, so she had settled for lan as a backup.
Maja was his only heartthrob, yet he was only her second choice.
She had never loved him, only used him for revenge. How ironic.
lan slammed his fist against the wall in frustration. He should have divorced her as soon as he returnedhome rather than indulging in their physical relationship, which had left him feeling like a scorned lover.
After leaving Solstice College, he pushed down his feelings and headed straight to Greenfield Gardens.
The Pearson case had been handed over to the police. All he had to do now was manage the companyand find a suitable fiancée when the time was right. Judith was certainly a good
choice.
Fitch called him at this time, sounding puzzled. “Why did you call off the search for Enc? Have yougiven up looking?”
lan had just finished showering and was loosely wrapped in a towel.
“Yeah, I’ve stopped looking.”
Whatever Eric’s motives were. It was for the higher–ups to worry about. He didn’t need to meet withthose two anymore.
He wouldn’t admit he was running away, afraid of witnessing a scene of Eric and Maja being intimate.That would drive him mad.
The only solution was to stop looking for them and focus on his own life.
All his regret had fermented into bitter wine, which he drank by himself. He just needed to
move on.
There was no need to hold onto a woman who didn’t want him. That’s not like him.
Fitch was silent momentarily before asking, “So you really don’t care about Maja’s well–beinganymore? You need to know that many people in Greenfield have a grudge against her. Especially thewomen who have shown interest in you in the past. Once you let go of Maja, she will face their ruthlessrevenge.”novelbin
lan scoffed, lighting a cigarette.
It was she who didn’t want him.
“My omnipotent brother will surely protect her. Her safety has nothing to do with me anymore. Wouldn’tthat make me a fool if I worried about her?”
Fitch sighed in relief, “It’s good that you’ve come to terms with it. But aren’t you interested in theexperiment being investigated by the higher–ups?”
lan used to investigate Eric’s affairs because of Holden. But now that Holden was dead, what was thepoint of investigating his brother?
A fool’s errand.
“I’m not interested. I’m just a businessman. Don’t involve me in their affairs anymore.”
Seeing his determination, Fitch didn’t try to persuade him further.
Everyone had objected to lan being with Maja in the first place, thinking she wasn’t good
enough.
Now that she was deceiving him with lies, it was utterly despicable.
She’d better die out there and never come back so as not to offend everyone’s eyes.
“Okay, I understand,” Fitch replied.
