Chapter 1038

Maja touched her forehead, realizing the fever had indeed subsided.

“Zoey, are you sure you don’t want to stay home and rest? I’m a businessman, and I really need you tocome back to the office with me, but work comes second to your health.”

“Mr. Pennyfeather, I’m fine now.”

Seeing she was insistent, Maja dropped the subject, and they hurried off to the office.

In the following week, Maja barely returned home. The few times she did, she saw lan waiting for her attheir shared townhouse, Rosewood Manor

She was too busy, however. She’d grab a few clothes, peck him on the cheek, and leave him to go tosleep alone.

lan went from understanding to silence after being persistently neglected for a week.

The last time she returned to Rosewood Manor, lan wasn’t there.

She was too swamped to look for him, and when she tried calling him, he didn’t pick up.

She considered driving to his office at Raymond Corporation, but her own executives phoned her tohurry back for a meeting. Nowadays, she only had half an hour of free time each day, the bareminimum to grab a bite.

By the time she reflected on her relationship

Maja was about to call Jeff to check

With lan, they hadn’t been in touch for three days.

on lan when the company receptionist called her.

“Mr. Pennyfeather, your biological parents have come to the office. They’d like to see you!

Maja thought she had

Sheard.

The receptionist sounded quite

“They said they have your

certificate, Mr. Pennyfeather. Would you like to come down?”

Maja recalled a conversation with Phelps about her past. She had never done a thorough investigationbecause she had accepted Lillian as her mother and feared the truth about her abandonment.

And now her birth parents had shown up.

She quickly ended the call and headed down to the reception. There, she saw a modestly dressed manand woman.novelbin

The woman approached her and called out, “Maja.”

Maja frowned and gestured toward a nearby sofa. “Let’s talk over there.”

The woman, Clara, nodded to her partner, Drew, and they took a seat.

Once Maja joined them, they presented her with a DNA test result.

“Maja, we were only notified a few days ago that our daughter was in Greenfield. That’s why we

Clara explained, her voice soft.

Looking at the DNA results, Maja asked, “What did you use for the test?”

veled all the way from Crystalbrook Valley.”

“Your hair. A doctor kept some when you were hospitalized. We had reported our daughter stolen yearsago, and the police had kept our files for DNA testing”

Maja guessed the doctor might have been Phelps, who had mentioned this before.

“Maja, you can have another DNA test done if you don’t believe us.”

Drew pulled out a few strands of his own hair and placed them beside her.

Not quite convinced, Maja decided to take the strands and have another test done. Meanwhile, Claraappeared certain that Maja was their lost daughter

“Maja, we’ve been looking for you for so long. You can’t deny us. Your brother needs you”

Maja remained silent as the receptionist brought some water.

“My brother?”

“Yes, our son. He came to Greenfield to work a few years ago and was wrongfully convicted. He’sfacing ten years in prison. Maja, you’re a CEO now. You can help get him out, right? He’s in histwenties and still single. The girl’s family looks down on us for being poor. We can’t afford a dowry. Ashis sister, you’d be willing to help, right?”

After Clara finished speaking. Drew tugged at her sleeve

“Let’s wait for the DNA results before discussing these matters.”

But Clara held onto Maja’s hand, her words seemingly earnest but laden with greed

“If you could provide us with steady jobs, that would be great too. Let us work at your company. When Igave birth to you, I lost a lot of blood. After you were stolen, I almost died.”

Drew nodded in agreement. “That’s true. Your mother almost passed away because of you.”

Maja listened to their back–and–forth, watching as they nearly divvied up her entire fortune.
