Jasper was numb and calm, but his curt remark was damaging to Liana. She froze up and felt hercheeks burning in shame. It was as though she had been slapped a few times.
Javier and Sophia were stunned by the tum of events. Only Betty had a guileful smile on her face. Afterthe events from that night, she had seen Liana for who she was–an obnoxiously conceited bitch whohad manipulated her to attack the others.
Liana was unsuitable to marry into their family. Betty even hoped Jasper would cut Liana off foreverinstead of pausing the marriage.
“Jasper, are you giving me up?” Shocked and scared, Llana held to his arm as tears rolled down hercheeks. “Are you ditching me after you learned that Alice White is from the Taylor family? Did youregret your divorce?” 1
“Alice White or Alyssa Taylor, she has no bearing on my decision to put a halt to our marriage.” Heslowly but surely freed his arm from her grip. There was nothing but coldness in his eyes.
He continued, “I’ve warned you not to give her trouble, but what did you do instead? You slandered hermultiple times and made up fake rumors to place her under public scrutiny. I don’t understand yourresentment toward her.”
“That’s not true, Jasper! I only wanted to show you her true colors! I didn’t want you to be misled by herlies!” She hurriedly scrambled to grab him, but he took a step back. She missed and almost toppledover.
“She lied to you from the start! Why would you give up on our decades of relationship for a bitch? Don’tyou even feel bad for me?”novelbin
“She might have lied to me, but she has never hurt me or anyone else.”
He felt pain when he thought of Alyssa’s bright smile that she had reserved only for him. He muttered,“Let’s leave it at that. We’ll take a break and think over our compatibility.”
Liana watched as he left. Her throat tightened as she struggled to breathe. How did it come to this?Was she going to lose her dream wedding?
“No, I’d do anything to marry Jasper!” she fumed silently. She wouldn’t let Alyssa ruin the plan that shehad carefully crafted for decades.
“My grandson is loyal in love but not a fool. He knows right from wrong! Ms. Gardner, I thought you’dput on the act until you’re married. but you showed your true face faster than I thought.”
Newton became increasingly outraged, to the point that his nose reddened. “It’s your own fault thatthings have come to this point. You keep distorting the truth, stirring trouble, and bullying Alice!”
“Sir, she’s now Alyssa, not Alice.” Ben reminded Newton in a hushed voice.
“Does that matter? They’re the same person anyway!” Newton was unbothered while Liana’s fingerturned red from the fumbling. She was in anguish from the shame and anger.
Meanwhile, Betty was trying to hold her laughter as her shoulders quivered in excitement. What apayback!
“Let’s leave, Ben! Get me a good wine later and some food to go with it!”
“Sir, you’ve drunk a lot at the event. For your health, it’s better if ”
“I feel happier now than when I was celebrating my birthday. Just do what I asked you to. Why theluss?” The old man grumbled as he walked away with Ben’s help.
Those left behind were in a foul mood.
“Javier, you must speak to Jasper! How could he change his mind when we’ve announced theengagement? This is embarrassing for the Becketts!”
Sophia swung Javier’s arm worriedly in the same manner as Liana. “He’ll listen to his dad. How couldhe give up on the marriage after all these years that Lia walted for him?”
Javier, who doted on his wife, felt Irritated by her pestering. He replied flatly, “Don’t you know Jasper?He never makes decisions in the heat of the moment. He must have come to that conclusion aftercareful thought!”
