Chapter 582

Eddy sounded so surprised that his tone snapped Caroline out of her daze.

She looked at him strangely. “Why are you so surprised? It’s not like this is your first time hearing

this.”

Eddy froze. “Does she make things difficult for you all the time?”

His question made Caroline laugh out loud. “Don’t tell me you don’t know about this. novelbin

“You know fairly well that she pretended to be sick just so she could get one of my kidneys. I’m not

buying it if you tell me that you don’t know about it.”

“I asked her to apologize to you for that,” Eddy explained.

“She did that because Grandpa forced me to marry you back then-”

“Is that a valid reason for her to hurt someone else? So I have the right to kill someone because of

something, then?”

Caroline stared right into his eyes as she spoke. “I get to explain myself because I lived. If I had

died…”

Caroline’s gaze turned cold. “You would all think that I deserved it.”

“I-” Eddy started but was cut short with a wave of her hand. She didn’t want to listen to him explain

himself anymore.

“Can I ask you something? Why are you so biased?”

Eddy opened his mouth to say something, but his thoughts went back to when he had been seven

or eight years old.

Jude had taken him and Caroline abroad. Layla, who had still been very young, had thrown a tantrum

because she had wanted to go along with them.

After setting off, they had headed to Halvia to switch to their connecting flight.

Halvia had been in a rather chaotic state at that time. News about the rich and their family

members getting abducted or kidnapped had been common there..

So Jude had taken a team of 30 bodyguards with them that day.

Caroline glanced strangely at him. He said nothing for quite some time, so she thought she had

finally managed to persuade him.

Letting out a sigh, she said, “I hope that you won’t talk badly about him in front of me in the

future. You don’t know him at all, so you don’t have the right to judge him.

“We won’t meet each other anymore, anyway.”

Eddy’s heart throbbed at her words, and his mood turned foul. “What now? Are you thinking of

leaving Earth then?” His tone was icy.

Caroline glanced at him and smiled. “I don’t want Layla to look for me every other day.”

Layla had confronted her because Eddy had visited her at the hospital. Surely, Layla would burn

Evans Group down if she found out that he had driven Caroline home.

It wasn’t that Caroline feared Layla. It was just that she had something more important to handle

now. She wanted to turn Evans Group into a more powerful business as soon as possible.

She didn’t wish Evans Group to remain a small business. That wasn’t what she’d had in mind

when she had taken over the company.

She wanted to use the company as a springboard to restore the Evans‘ name to its former glory.

That way, Kirk wouldn’t have to work under Eddy’s second uncle anymore or do anything against

his will. Like getting registered on his behalf.

“Layla gave you trouble?”

Despite Jude’s efforts, Eddy, Caroline, and Layla had been kidnapped amidst the chaos. At a tender

age, the three of them had suffered the torment of being beaten every day and having nothing to eat at

all.

The torture had lasted for about a week until they had met a kind–hearted robber who couldn’t bear to

see them getting tortured anymore.

After the man had secretly let them go, the three of them had run a long way. They had finally found a

small shop, where Eddy had begged the shopkeeper to lend them his phone.

After making the call, they had stayed in the shop and waited for help.

Eddy could still vividly remember how the shop had been engulfed in darkness. They had had to switch

on the lights just to see something.

There had been a simple kitchen near the entrance of the shop. Besides a couple of kitchenwares,

there had only been a gas tank for cooking. That had been their first time seeing a gas tank.

They became less afraid after they had waited for more than an hour. They watched the shopkeeper

cook, their eyes wide with surprise.

However, just when the atmosphere had turned slightly pleasant, the sound of cars honking had

pierced the air, followed by the ear–splitting noise of guns being fired.

The shopkeeper had collapsed, and sudden bursts of flames had come out of nowhere, frightening

the three children.

Soon, flames had surrounded them. They had glanced around, helpless.

Although Eddy was the eldest among them, he had been so terrified that he had wet his pants. His legs

had turned to jelly, and he hadn’t been able to move a single muscle.

Just then, a pair of small yet strong hands had shoved him away.

The next thing he knew, he had heard a sharp cry from somewhere. He couldn’t remember

anything else that happened afterward. He had forgotten all about it.

He had met Layla again after a week. She, too, had been hospitalized, and she had had varying

degrees of burns on her body. Fortunately, she had recovered just fine.

On the other hand, Caroline had been taken abroad by her parents. Jude had told them that the

kidnapping had affected her psychological state too much. She had needed to get treatment

Eddy hadn’t cared about that. He had merely wanted to know who had saved him. So he asked

Jude, “Grandpa, is Caroline hurt?”

“Carol’s parents didn’t inform me of her condition. She probably wasn’t hurt.”

Ever since then, Eddy had been sure that Layla was the one who had saved him.
