As Emma and Wayne made their way back to the buzzing banquet hall, the weight of the evening’s
events hung heavily between them. Emma, her spirit unbroken by the confrontation, couldn’t help but
reflect on the stark contrast between her past and present.
“Seems like history tried to repeat itself tonight, huh?” Wayne’s voice pulled Emma from her thoughts,
his tone light but concerned.
Emma managed a small smile, her resolve shining through. “Yes, but history didn’t account for me
learning from it. Lillian’s attempts don’t shake me anymore.”
Wayne glanced at her, pride evident in his gaze. “That’s my sister. Strong and unyielding.”
Their shared smile was interrupted by Alex’s approach, his steps hesitant yet determined. Emma’s

her.
“Alex,” Emma greeted coolly, her voice betraying none of her inner turmoil.

change what was. What’s done is done, Alex.”
Alex’s gaze faltered, the weight of his actions finally settling in. “I know, Emma. I just wish I could back
and see things for what they were.”
Wayne couldn’t contain his skepticism. “Wishes don’t change the past, Alex. Actions do. And your
actions have spoken volumes.”
Alex winced at the truth in Wayne’s words, his guilt deepening.

“I’ve been blind, Emma. To your pain, to your struggles. And I’ve let you down when you needed me
